Weekend Message: Your Questions Answered – Should I support a political party? [Matthew 22:15-22]

Jesus was in Jerusalem for the Passover. He was a public figure with a fairly large following. This made Him a target for the political establishment.

The issue was taxes. Should the people pay the Imperial tax or not. If He was “pro-tax” He would side with the “Herodian” party, who supported the Roman government. If He was “anti-tax” He would side with the Pharisees who were against the Roman occupation.

Jesus’ answer was almost apolitical. He said, “Give to Cesar what is Cesar’s and give to God what is God’s.” With this answer He wasn’t taking either political side and remained a target of both parties. These two groups, who were political adversaries, worked together against Jesus and ultimately played a major role in His death.

Without a party was Jesus committing a political downfall? This week as we continue our message series “Your Questions Answered”, we’ll be looking at the question “Should I support a political party?” Do you imagine Jesus siding with one party over the other? How do we fit in God’s kingdom and work inside the structure of our government?
