I've seen so many people watching this movie and you are the first ones laughing during the pressure song. So weird, this is probably the most meaningful song in the histroy of animation and you just saw the donkeys 😀 didn't expect that

btw that "dog from Harry Potter" is Cerberus, the three headed hound from Greek myth that guards the underworld who was defeated by Heracles. Its used a lot in fiction, like Harry Potter as mentioned.
Generational curses are real, magic or no. This movie hit me right in the mommy issues.
Need a compilation of them saying “family” its so funny
As a Latina, who lives in Latin America, this film meant a lot to me, i sobbed while watching it in the theater. This kind of generational trauma is so common in our families… we’re so used to hiding our problems, sweeping everything under the rug… and when you don’t fit in your family you’re shunned, often talked about why you’re different, why you aren’t like the rest… I related to Luisa, Bruno, and Mirabel the most. It still makes me cry specially during Dos Oruguitas, and the second song, Luisa’s song makes me teary eyed.
I love that theres been a change in western animated films that talk more about actual problems. You should watch Pixar’s Onward.
I like to think that the reason Abuela was so adamant in her happy ending she devised for Isabela, stems from the fact that she sees herself in Isabela. And the guy looks similar to Abuelo. I think she wanted the fairy tale she had ripped from her and live vicariously through theirs.

This movie hit hard for me bc I am the Bruno in my family.
I really enjoy the Oak thoughtful commentary, he digested the film and thought beyond himself as another viewer how this film can be relatable and scored not based in comparisons.
Her love was for her family. Always was. So of course her gift would be the family glue.
What you said about the aunt with weather powers makes me wonder if they'd lived in a different climate with too much sun, would stressful moments lead to hot weather and pleasant moments to cool/rainy weather?

The Oak mentioned generational trauma and said that the movie wasn't exactly that but it actually was. Generational trauma starts with a major event that affects a group of people. Their original home was attacked, houses burned and people killed. The people not just Abuela, were forced to flee and were even being chased by the attackers. It was Abuela's power, the "miracle" that saved not just Abuela and her children, but all of the other people who had fled with them. The house reflected the condition of the family, specifically Mirabel's place within the family. When she felt excluded and down, the house was falling apart and the house and candle got better when she improved her relationship with her sister. When Mirabel and Abuela argued, the house collapsed. Mirabel didn't get a gift because she already possessed the magic. She's a source for the magic that powers the gifts of the others, just like Abuela. That's why when the house, and the family bonds, were repaired, Mirabel was able to bring back the magic. Abuela was trying so hard to protect the family and their gifts because of that original trauma, too. The family bonds weren't repaired by the miracle, but by people talking and understanding each other better. To me, that's the most important lesson of all in the movie.
PEOPLE THAT HATE ENCANTO = 💩💩
I'm so happy you guys finally reacted to my favourite movie of all time! When I first watched Encanto in December 2021, I instantly fell in love with it. And like The Answer said, the music was a major reason why.
But I also fell in love with the characters, the colours, the animation and, most of all, the story.
The Oak hit the nail on the head when he said what the message of the movie was: that you're special and unique no matter if you have a "special gift/skill" or not. You do not have to be crazy good at something to be someone. You are perfect the way you are.
It was awesome to rewatch the movie with you guys, as always 🙂
I have always felt left out in my family so this movie had me crying so much.
I have also always had the pressure that everything should be perfect, good grades etc when I grew up so Louisa's song felt like like my own athem.
No movie have ever had me relate so much as this one has.
This made my top two favorite animated movies as soon as I saw it! I could relate a lot to Mirabel and Bruno for being the black sheep of the family, but also to Isabella for always having to be perfect and to Luisa for having to be strong and and kind of keep the family together. I remember I cried the first time I heard surface pressure (Luisa's song) because as an older sister it was kind of "my job" to take care of younger siblings and cousins, to be a perfect example, and to play therapist for my mom. It always felt like a lot of responsibilities so seeing it being acknowledged in the song made me tear up. I saw afterwards that a lot of women and girls who were eldest daughters felt the same way I did listening to that song.
When I started following your channel I had no idea my guilty pleasures like ‘Pitch Perfect’ and ‘Encanto’ would also resonate with you guys. Thanks for all you do.

Moving Fast: This was the same reaction I had! And, to be honest, I still imagine that Mirabel's gift does have to do with walking in the surrealism/realism lines, being able to connect closely to each family member through it. Usually people don't see it at all, and I'm really pleased someone else was seeing something at least sort of similar. Enjoyed your reaction!

It's kinda hard to enjoy this movie cause Abuela really makes me mad. At least Luisa's song is a bop lol (I prefer the song in German though)
I loved this movie, its very nostalgic of my childhood back in the Philippines where the entire family would live in one big house. Even just watching a reaction, the movie still pulls on the heartstring. The songs are so well written and composed. Glad you guys enjoyed it too

This movie and family dynamic is incredibly relatable to latinx and immigrant families! The responsability to be successful, to be perfect, to honor your ancestors sacrifices, the pressure, etc. Mirabels gift was not having a gift to expose the toxicity and help everyone stay together and happy first.
Also, the music is so good and integral to the story because it was by lin manuel miranda, famously from musical theatre.
I liked this movie a lot more than CoCo and I can't understand why anyone would even compare these two but that's just me

I loved how tickled The Answer was to the donkeys and animation. I love this movie.
I think the gut punch comes from the scene where they lose the grandpa tragically. The song is in Spanish but it’s a beautiful song so that may be why it missed but also you sympathize with the grandma in that moment where she would be the closest thing to a villain for the movie before that. Great movie, but yeah if you compare to Coco it might not be there but for me it was close.

I totally love this movie, for its deep learnings and messages which we rarely had like this in any other Disney movie.
In this one (as the Oak mentioned), there are soooo many things hidden, many more as it seems on first sight.
– I think Mirabel DID get her gift at her ceremony: It was the casita/ the connection with it itself, and therefore the magic = family itself.
I think her door didn`t disappear – it became one with the house. She GOT a room – the whole house IS her room. The whole house aka the family – the love for her family, the cohesion of all family members. Her door was the entrance door all the way long.
But Mirabel never actually used her gift, not on purpose. And when she finally did, by awakening and restoring the family`s "team spirit" – in the end, it became visible (with the door glowing), and it reactivated the magic.
So, I think, her gift was always there.
But it didn`t become visible, because Mirabel ( and the family) denied and suppressed it – family always telling her "she can`t help, she can`t do this, she should stop with … everything." And when Mirabel finally decides to go against this, to stand up for herself, and to use, to live what she loves, she starts to use her gift/s – her strengths born from her love for her family, and it becomes visible.
I also think one key scene here is the doorknob Antonio hands her in the end. "We made this for you." WE made this – the whole family made it for Mirabel, which means she`s accepted now as she is, and her love is given back.
And then finally her door appears visible and reactivates the magic as a whole.
– I also never saw Bruno`s Vision as "House is fine, Mirabel appears, house gets cracks."
I saw it as "house has cracks, Mirabel appears, house is fine." = Mirabel`s task/ gift is to fix the house (aka family/ magic).
– I think there is more than one reason why the magic fades, and later comes back:
1) One of the magic`s roots lie in the cohesion between the family`s members. The house and magic gets cracks the moment the family started to fall apart = started to shut out Mirabel (not being in the photo). And in that moment, the magic and gifts start to disappear.
2) Another reason why the magic disappears could be, because the family members were unhappy; weren`t themselves, overused or didn`t use the magic as it was meant to be for them.
= aka the pressure that Abuela puts on everyone, especially the grandkids. It´s like that they lose their worth if they don`t have/ use their gift.
Especially with Mirabel, Abuela treats her as if she`s less worth than the others/ worthless/ useless and almost tells her that directly ("you`re no help, step aside"). Also Isabela treats her like that.
Mirabels gift also is to
1) bring that unhappiness to light
2) and undo this pressure/ turn it around.
Getting her deeply unhappy sisters/ family to admit the damage that pressure did, and to heal it. Getting Luisa to admit she becomes weak, and also doesn`t always want to be the strong one, and to encourage her that that`s ok. Getting Isabela to admit her unhappiness and what she really wants, and unlocking her true powers.
– Also I recognized another thing, when I saw the movie again with you: In the scene when the family takes the photo and Mirabel sings "I can`t make flowers bloom // I can`t heal whats broken // I´m not that strong // …"
I was like "Oh yes girl, YOU CAN. YOU CAN DO ALL OF IT."
I realized, Mirabel got ALL the gifts her family got:
– she healed what was broken
– she made Isabelas true flowers visible/ bloom
– she was the strongest of all – strength comes in more than one shape.
– she gave Bruno the courage to get visions again (and was physically part of it)
– she "hears" everyone. Not physically, but emotionally. She not only "hears", she really listens to her familys real desires, and helps them to achieve it. (Isabela, Luisa ~) Also seeing that Dolores was in love with Mariano, and gets them together. Cheering Antonio up before his ceremony, what no one else did. No one else seemed to see/ care that the boy was deeply frightened.
– Shapeshifting: she changed her family, and also grew/ changed herself.
– Animal talking: I think it`s not about animals, but about .. being able to talk to the one`s which are usually not heard.
Fe Antonio when he was scared before his ceremony. Mirabel is not only the only one who really listens to her family`s sorrows, HER words also change something = are being understood.
(- Wheater changing: hmm not sure … but since Mirabel constantly provokes Pepa and causes thunderstorms, … that counts? xD)
+, as many others mentioned, Mirabel is most likely meant to become Abuela`s successor.
– 2nd thought about "Mirabel unified all the gifts in herself":
Mirabel didn`t "get" a gift – she WAS the gift.
The lesson is that gifts are not special skills or magic, but the people we love themselves. And their strengths inside, born from the love they have themselves.
(If I`d have the time, I could write way more about this movie 😂😂)
I love Badd Medicine's fresh perspectives on movies like this. While Encanto was very relatable to me in terms of family dynamic, generational trauma, ect, I could understand why someone without that background wouldn't relate as much. I also love how despite not necessarily relating you guys always give your honest reaction knowing that you may not have the same type of reaction as another audience member. I still don't agree with people comparing Encanto to Coco because they both bring something different to the table. 😀

That mountain crack opening them up to the world can make a great plot for a sequel.
I honestly didn't like abuela through most of the film.😢 I felt she was too focused on her families reputation and power and purposely excluded Maribel from the family. Granted what happened to her was terrible but she had forgot the reason she was given the miracle in the first place. Her husband and father of her children gave his life to protect his family and she forgot about that sacrifice because of her focus on her families powers and the image they had with the town.

I love that you guys finally watched this! Such an incredible movie! I think it's neat all of the little details they added, like using the power of 3s… You've got the Past (Julietta), Present (Pepa), and Future (Bruno); Hearing, Seeing, Talking (Dolores, Camillo, and Antonio), and Beauty, Brains, and Braun (Isabella, Mirabel, and Luisa) – I could watch this movie all the time and never be sick of it. Also the way Abuela plays down her trauma in the beginning when we hear about her husband Pedro and then what the reality of it was and how incredibly painful it was for her. Seeing Abuela cry at the end always makes me cry too.
