"We couldn't breathe": Lagos building collapse kills 2, search for survivors goes on

Two people died after a seven-storey building under construction collapsed in Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos in the early hours of Sunday, with rescue efforts underway to find survivors, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency.

The agency’s chief executive Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the building was being constructed next to a hospital in the neighbourhood of Oniru, adding that at least four people were still trapped under the rubble. A crowd watched as a construction excavator was used to remove debris, in an attempt to save the individuals.

“The top floor fell first,” eyewitness Segun Awokoya said. “We were all trapped inside the lodge with dust everywhere, we couldn’t breathe.”

According to Reuters, buildings frequently collapse in Africa’s most populous country, where regulations are poorly enforced and construction materials often substandard.
