We could colonize the Moon NOW

Colonizing the Moon is one of the most important things we will do this century, but right now we’re just sitting around waiting for Artemis and Starship. Let’s not do that and start colonizing the Moon right now.

  1. I think to quickly develop a base on a moon we need improvements in deltaV of our spaceships, either via some kind of gas-core fission drives with high ISP high thrust or from infrastructure like sky-hooks. The latter are really interesting concept, can be used to lift payloads from LEO, and transfer them with minimal acceleration required to the moon surface if in orbit around moon. They can also recover energy of payloads (like crewed spacecrafts with astronauts returning from the moon) and use it for future launches. And we have all the prerequisites to build them, no need for nanotubes etc. to build one.

  2. The Italian Government? They can't even keep hentai porn out of their Senate, I don't think they're the best organization to work with for delicate things like space missions.

That said, I certainly agree we should be going to the Moon before we try colonizing Mars.

  3. Regardless if USA doesn't build a moon base there will be a human moon base soon.

This fact alone will most likely result in there being at least two bases there soon after the first is built.

  4. Kyplanet, you're the best YouTuber in astronomy! Your perspectives are so smart and you always make me feel better and amazed! Your thoughts about colonizing the moon make the most sense! I really wish that you could reach 1 Million subscribers asap, you deserve it. Keep up your good work! πŸ‘

  5. I would love to see a moon base from the American side but i just dont see it happing from them, China on the other hand there are planning a moon base by 2035 official lading in 2029 or 2030 there timetable is more realistic then the US at the moment.

  6. 8:30 I'm going to have to disagree with this whole premise. "We could have Falcon Heavy deliver un-manned lunar habitats to the moon and robotically assemble a base". This just isn't true. Can falcon heavy deliver these payloads? Yes. Can these payloads do the things suggested? Yes. Do these payloads exist today? No. Can these payload be financed, built, tested, and loaded faster than Artemis, which has been in the works in some shape or form, for a decade or more? No. Something like this can't just be spun up and executed "while we wait", it would take just as long, if not longer to get moving. Capital investments are instantaneous with the decisions. They take a whole lot of time. And the other big question is "who?". SpaceX doesn't care about the moon any more than NASA is paying them to. NASA has pretty limited funds and all their plans have to go through congress where decisions are made based on job programs more than results. Maybe Blue Origin, the notoriously slow company that as of 1/12/2025 hasn't launched anything to orbit? None of the other space companies could bankroll something like this…

  7. Meh coin to the moonπŸš€

while humanity is stuck in its cradle for almost 60 years, comforting itself by burning its own house and passing through its peak population.
    We have peaked-out apparently.
Soon we will have no people or reason to send out into space. The flag on Mare Tranquillitatis will be our legacy forever.

  8. Doing things like laying a Starship on it's side aren't workable. Aside from the difficulty of trying to lay a 50 meter high 100 ton sheet metal tube that was not meant to be laid on it's side on it's side and do it on the moon. Trying the renovate propellant tanks into a habitat on the moon is also a bridge too far….How we build a moon base in the short term is we use HLS to build a landing pad on Luna then we use cargo starships to deliver whatever we need to Luna. Cargo capacity should be north of 100 tons per flight. At that rate we could move thousand of tons to Luna per year. Not being mass constrained everything gets cheaper, faster and simultaneously more robust.

  9. The real problem with all of the proposed lunar base ideas mentioned is that none of them took into account radiation shielding. I guess you could just say screw it, the first few people are getting cooked and let them look for some lava tubes or lunar caves for the next people, but any base we set up now is destined for abandonment unless we plan for something that provides adequate and safe radiation protection

  10. The GDR already established a moon base decades ago. They've even got their own YouTube channel:
    DDR Mondbasis

Every few days, they post clips of how successful the colony weathers every challenge whilst allowing its population unprecedented levels of socialist satisfaction.

  11. Hello Kyplanet I really like your content. I would appreciate it if you added pics and vids of the items you are talking about like the Falcon heavy, Artemis, rendering of possible moon bases, ISS etc, I think you would most likely see increased engagement and more subs. Thanks
