Building a pandemic-free future won’t be easy, but Bill Gates believes that we have the tools and strategies to make it possible — now we just have to fund them. In this forward-looking talk, he proposes a multi-specialty Global Epidemic Response and Mobilization (GERM) team that would detect potential outbreaks and stop them from becoming pandemics. By investing in disease monitoring, research and development as well as improved health systems, Gates believes we can “create a world where everyone has a chance to live a healthy and productive life — a life free from the fear of the next COVID-19.”

Instead of managing outbreaks, why not prevent them in the first place? We can clearly almost eradicate them if we minimize our contact with animals. Isn't that clear enough?

Bill's fire analogy is a good one. Here's how it played out: A house is on fire. Fire department show up and say "The only way to fight this fire is for us to take a year to develop a new system to prevent fires." Meanwhile, some smart neighbors said "Hey, water and sand have worked on other fires in the past" and started fighting the fire. The fire department clamped down on them hard, had them silenced and arrested, and forced everyone to wait on the new prevention system, which ended up working very poorly.
