If anyone's wondering, the sponge tnt didn't work because the water is one block high. Basically, the water source blocks around kept on filling it with flowing water, gets converted to source blocks until it fill out the area again. If the water was deeper like on an ocean there would be a hole on the water. In functionality, it would be better for drying the ocean monument than using sponges.
My theory for the inverted tnt is that it heals you instead of damaging you
