  1. Couple of things!

Map of the Zoo so you can get an idea of where I'm going: https://detroitzoo.org/visit/map/

Since I only like to focus on the animal aspects of zoos, if you're a local, comment below what other features the Detroit Zoo offers that weren't included in the video!

Turns out, the website doesn't make you click on parking before you can buy a ticket. It's just really buggy and will give you an error message at random times.

The Hideout seems to no longer contain sloths, it's fruit bats and rock pythons.

Wondering what the first tour will be? This will answer that question: https://youtu.be/t7jOAyvRJDI?si=lEM-SZto8CV1XCGn

  2. Went last week and it was 95 degrees so yes it can get VERY hot in Michigan and Detroit Zoo is natorious for lack of shade so if you're going in May-Early September pack and dress accordingly. We also get alot of Summer Storms so rain gear is paramount

  3. As a frequent visitor to this zoo, I'd agree with everything you said. I've never seen the beavers in at least 5 visits that I've looked for them, but I have seen the wolves each time I've been there.

  4. Out of all the aza zoos I’d say Detroit is up there for biggest decline. Bush dogs, black bears, hippos, painted dogs, seals, and elk plus many others are species they have lost In the last decade. And I don’t think the moated style habitats will age well and be considered outdated in a decade or so.

  5. Great breakdown of one of my home state zoos! I think what you said at 12:24 is the key to why I'm so fond of the Detroit Zoo. You can't really find a single exhibit that's isn't adequate for its residents. Although as you noted some are almost too good, to the point you never see the animals, like the Aardvark. I'm also pretty sure I've seen the wolves on all of my visits, so I wouldn't consider them a likely no show from my own personal experiences. I did, however, go years without seeing a Polar Bear, until my luck improved more recently. A shame you didn't see the Wolverines, they're my personal favorites at Detroit.

  6. Really happy to see Zoo Tours back in my hometown zoo! Couple of helpful tidbits:

Wildlife Interpretive Gallery: It is a walkthrough aviary / butterfly house, but it's also an art gallery with different paintings and sculptures with a conservational message. The star attraction is Butcherman, a snare sculpture based on a real lion whose foot was amputated after it was caught in a snare trap. The lion would surpass scientists' expectations and live for three more years than expected.

Beavers: 17 years of living and I have never seen them. My mom thinks they're not real at this point.

National Amphibian Conservation Center: This, the penguins and the polar bears are the must-see parts of the zoo. The Amphibians are especially good in the summer, as usually when I go in, barely anyone else is in there.

Great Apes of Harambee: I do agree with the fact that it's less lush, a reason why I prefer John Ball Zoos chimpanzee habitat, though I don't know if they could even add any plant covering due to the exhibit being built on a moat.

African / American Grasslands: Sorry to hear you didn't like the Africa section but it's an understandable reason. I always thought they could bring in more species to the watering hole (more on that later), but one thing you did miss when talking about this area is a massive warthog enclosure near the train station. Sucks that you missed the wolverine as the last two times I've visited they were very active.

Overall, I'm very happy you gave a positive review, as the amount of hate I've seen for this facility is honestly undeserved. Luckily for the main criticism they've been adding more interesting species as of late, and the upcoming KidZone (which is probably why there were storks and crane in Asia) is set to return Bush Dogs to the zoo. The only major criticism I have is that they should turn more empty space into exhibits as there are a lot of picnics spaces, they rarely anyone uses. Can't wait to see you reboot the tours of Detroit!

  7. Detroit Zoo had an aquarium! Wow-wee! Say, try to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium someday? And here are my 2 recent zoo trivia questions for you & your girlfriend, Zak….

    1) What year did the San Francisco Zoo once house giant pandas?

    2) Besides the sika deer & muntjac deer, what other deer species did the Oakland Zoo have before the California Trail attraction is built?

  8. Happy to discover this channel. I love going to zoos and aquariums. It's fantastic to see many different creatures around the world.

Not only that, but I do like zoo building games in which I could make my own zoos in them. It's really fun to play. Even if if takes hours to do.

Keep up the amazing work on your virtual zoo tours!

  9. Ooh! Did not expect you to do a review of my local zoo! Honestly, with all the reviews of the other zoos, I thought my zoo was crappy in comparison. But you did an amazing job at spotlighting Detroit. I feel proud of our little place now. Also, yes… we have never seen those beavers. At this point I'm convinced beavers are just a myth XD.

  10. The Penguin exhibit is the most impressive zoo exhibit I’ve ever seen and I can’t imagine it will be topped. My only complaint is how so many of the animals are in back relative to the entrance.
