Watch the 2023 John Lewis Christmas advert

John Lewis has turned to a cheeky carnivorous plant – and an operatic superstar – for its Christmas advertising campaign. After last year’s low-key charity-linked clip featuring a skateboarding foster dad, the department store chain has returned to its tried and tested formula of a heartwarming story featuring a child and an unusual friend – with a twist from some catchy Italian rock opera sung by the tenor Andrea Bocelli. The John Lewis Christmas ad, the 2023 version of which will be screened from Thursday, has over the last decade become a national moment, marking the beginning of the festive shopping binge.

  1. Finally figured out the song – must be my TV but I couldn’t make it out before. Next thing to figure out: the point. My working hypothesis is they started with the soft toy in corporate colours to rival a certain Piggy 🐷 then took it from there. Either that or it’s aimed at the Plant-based (geddit) market share.

  2. I see this as an allegorical tale trying to subliminally persuade us that the magic bean sellers are not always out to eat your liver, sometimes they just want to reward you with shiny gifts while off camera they're robbing you of your birthright….. 🤔 I could be wrong tho.

  3. What a horrible advert, really used to enjoy the John Lewis Christmas advert but they're just getting awful. Kid didn't even say please, just gran can I have this? And the mother is basically teaching her kid that it's ok to dump something you have nurtured, put time, effort and love into.
They'll never beat bear and hare imo. This ain't it.
