My father had a friend who was on the road to Arnhem in Guards Armoured. Towards the end of his life he wondered what his mates had died for

I am now 84 years of age and my, dad a proud Scot, was a paratrooper at Arnhem and many other theatres of war. He survived the war but refused to apply for his medals and he said “I don’t want medals for killing people.”
