Beneath the streets of Washington D.C. lies a fascinating network of tunnels that remain largely unknown to the public. These passageways, ranging from public pedestrian walkways to government-only corridors, reveal a hidden side of the nation’s capital. Did you know the Capitol is connected to other federal buildings by tunnels originally designed to shield legislators from harsh weather? Or that a secret conveyor belt once transported books from the Library of Congress directly to the Capitol?
The tunnels beneath Capitol Hill go beyond practicality—they’ve been a part of critical moments in U.S. history. During the Cold War, they were reinforced as fallout shelters, and more recently, they provided secure escape routes during the chaos of January 6, 2021. Even the FBI attempted to use tunnels for spying under the Soviet Embassy during Operation MONOPOLY, though the plan was riddled with technical failures.
These passageways also hold quirks and hidden treasures, like the Cannon Tunnel, where student art decorates the walls alongside post offices, cafeterias, and even shoe repair shops. In some tunnels, abandoned projects like unfinished subways serve as reminders of forgotten ambitions. And while the public sees only a fraction of these tunnels, restricted corridors link the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and even secret White House bunkers.
Explore the stories, mysteries, and surprises of this underground world. From secret passageways used by presidents to logistics innovations like driverless Senate subways, these tunnels are far more than simple pathways—they’re a glimpse into the hidden history of Washington D.C.

Not so secret, you can tour.
Thanks for sharing Ryan and I pray that you, your family & anyone who reads this has a very Merry Christmas & God bless! ~ Scott 💙🙏🏻
The University of Minnesota main campus has a similar set of tunnels. Some are official passages, signed & on maps. Others are technically maintenance tunnels, but generations of students have discovered & used them—very convenient in a MN winter!
So it’s a sewage system. Neat!!
It's not a secret if it is on youtube….
No real photos of the tunnels today? Lame.
Shut down 1/2 of federal government for good….
Former gov sec agent. Have been in a couple.
J6 wasn't a riot
I wish current politicians would focus on the needs of Americans as much as they focus on keeping their feet dry and safe.
3:14 I had no idea Mexico was part of DC
Sounds like daybyou if that helps. Debut is French and the t is completely silent here.
Tunnel Snakes rule! – Butch Deloria
Always appreciate these stories, BTW.
"…still the politicians were at the mercy of Wahington's extreme weather…" – Climate change in the 1700s was no joke.
I did hear that the 1998 gunman incident was the only reason why there was an emergency evacuation plan for Congress, which is probably the main reason why all the lawmakers survived J6.
J6 they used the tunnels BAHAHAHA
"Let them in the front so we can pretend to go out the back"
The American public became more of a threat than the British Army 😆🦅
Hopefully DOGE will stop the unnecessary expansion for the elites. How about some bunkers for the regular folks ?
I can't believe you just said Capitol riots! This was all planned and executed by the Democrats using the FBI and their informants to storm the building and get everybody to follow and then arrest everybody except the informants! You may have just lost a bunch of subscribers
😡
There is a long history of secrete passageways in the Capitol. Like the trap door in the Majority Whip's office that leads outside. Apparently the Briitish used it to gain access to the Capitol during the War of 1812. I can tell you that you need a map to figure out where you are going in the web of tunnels at the Library of Congress.
0:04 is Cannon Tunnel. I’m familiar with the tunnel system from working in both the Library of Congress and House of Representatives and it’s pretty cool! Most people tourists and locals don’t even know what’s going on beneath the streets. As I believe for members of the public depending on the occasion are allowed to use the tunnel system minus the tunnel between the Library of Congress and Supreme Court
Just another way for senators to dodge their constituents
Then there are the tunnels that go through SC to other areas far away.
There are tunnels from DC that go to: Langley, Ft Meade, Camp Weather, Camp David, and even Site R (Ravenrock)
A bi t more about Ravenrock… Although it doesn’t appear like it at first, Ravenrock is considerably better protected than NORAD.
Annoying background music
muscovite fascists
lol the weather.
It ain’t SECRET anymore since you publicly identified it.
When I worked at HHS downtown, all 3 of the buildings were directly connected via the basement tunnels and were all commonly used.
