If you want to finish the game, turn to page 25.
If you want to give up and cry, turn to page 29.

Ian Livingstone’s Deathtrap Dungeon was a Fighting Fantasy, choose your own adventure novel, it was so popular in 1998 they made it into a 3rd person action game released on both PC and PlayStation, and it, is, hard.

I had this game as a kid, and could never beat it…

So now, 25 years later, I have returned to the town of Fang, to take the walk, and conquer the perilous depths, of Deathtrap Dungeon.

  1. I loved this game as a kid and every time someone mentions that "soulslike" games are the hardest or how frustrating the bosses in Elden Ring are, I just roll my eyes and tell them to play this game instead. Deathtrap Dungeon deserved much more love and a proper remake.

  2. F..THIS… GAME.
Here is a story: Have rocket launcher as the guy on the inverted castle,as
being paranoid is a game feature. I come across a small barrel robot. Thinking it will spew
flame, I ready an attack only to be hit by a cannon shot onto a ledge near the entrance.
Lying prone on the ground, I think I am safe. Then the due does an auto kick up off the
ground to his feet…off the ledge. To his death.

  3. Got a demo of this game with a magazine, and when I was ambushed by orcs and lopped their heads off, I was blown away. I got the full game and played through it a litte while after and I loved it. Now to watch the video, but for me, yes it was VERY good.

  4. Deathtrap Dungeon feels like a TV executive's idea of a video game, if that makes sense. I mean the kind of thing you'd have in the background of a kid's TV show, circa 1998, where a character is playing this by frantically mashing buttons on a controller. All while 8-bit bleeps and bloops inexplicably emerge the television speakers.

  5. Josh I have a suggestion for you, it's a PS1 game. Nightmare Creatures II
I played it when I was a young lad and this game traumatized and kicked my ass. Now, well now I want someone to suffer like I did 🤣

  6. 30:50: miyazaki himself mentioned that trying to beat fighting fantasy books while not knowing much english was one of his main inspirations for the serie as a whole.
but instead of mentioning that serie of books in particular he names Sorcery! as the main culprit for weird obtuse things in his games haha

  7. I really liked a lot about this game and the idea. Loved the levels. But it was sadly hard for all the wrong reasons. How about a Duke Nukem Time to Kill review? 😅

  8. It's like those crazy ideas you had as a kid that spiral out of control. 'What if you..you..you meet a LION in the cave and..and..and a ROBOT comes and blasts ya and spikes come down!!' gg Josh gg man

  9. I'd be really interested in seeing you do a final fantasy 8 "was it good" at some point. The game has been heavily criticized in the past, however, most of that comes from what people remember of the game from their childhood. The vast majority of people criticizing the game is due to them not understanding the junction system back in the day, and they just never tried to come back to it later in life, yet maintained that it wasn't good. I disagree. I think it's the most underrated FF, and possibly most underrated game in general. At the very least, the MC is THE most misunderstood character in gaming, bar none. I'd love to see you revisit this old classic and tell us once and for all, is it any good?

  11. To be fair, if they made an entire full length game based on Sen's Fortress, I'd eat that shit right up. Mm, that's some fine tasting shit, I'd say, while smacking my lips and wiping my mouth. My compliments to the chef.
