Often praised as the greatest JRPG of all time, Chrono Trigger is a time travelling journey where you start by saving a cat and end up killing a god.

It holds the top spot on many ‘best game ever’ lists, so everyone know’s it’s meant to be good, but is that just nostalgia talking? Does Chrono Trigger still hold up today?

Many thanks to the supporters on Patreon, Youtube and Twitch who allow me to create long form videos like this, while not needing to take sponsors to do so.

  1. this is the first and only jrpg i've ever finished. not that i hate jrpgs, i've played alot of them but somehow always quitting right before the final boss because it just got so tedious

  2. I know i am not on the patreon or the discord (lord knows im in too many already), but would Digimon World 1 be worth a look? specifically the first one, as it is the most unique of the series until Re: digitize and Next Order came out. For someone like you, who plays the games he reviews so thoroughly, i would love to hear your opinion about it.
You will more than likely require some help from the internet in order to make the best use of the training mechanic, but you didnt shy away from using an emulator on Symphony of the night, so i doubt you would hesitate much in that regard. and if you use an emulator for Digimon World as well, use the american copy as the european version of the game has a bug that would prevent players from completing a good chunk of the game. you can still get to the final boss, but you're going to miss out on roughly 18% of encounters.
if you're willing to look at Digimon World, please let me know.

  3. I was kinda hoping for a critical review and essay on the game and not just an overview of everything the game had to offer. Real nice job on the effort but wasn't def was hoping for something that covered the between-the-lines aspects of the game.

  4. actually Marle weapon makes sense if you think of it as Frog placing it there as a gift for her in the future for the kiss

the 1 frame faster thing i never thInk much of it other then the enemies are fast therefore It's harder to line them up

the problem i have with the game actually is that you can't get every gear and must choose between the weapons or defence item

  5. I remember running into the ghosting issue of "having to press 3 keys on a keyboard" issue in this game as a kid. Though that was because I was using a cheap keyboard. These days, most keyboards have anti-ghosting measures and you can press as many keys as needed because loads of games need you to press three keys at once occasionally.

  6. You mentioned Crono Trigger was a rejected story line for final fantasy, i cannot find any reference too this, I'm not saying you're wrong or right and id like to read more on this its very interesting. do you have a source?

  7. just one thing: Magus sister is SCHALA, so it is either spoken as Shala(if you use a germanic pronounciation) or Scala (like school,if english), although in the originalit was ment to be Sara, the old hebrew name/title for queen

  8. What, no fishing mini game, custom outfits or dating sim? Bah, 90's games are overrated! 😝

In all seriousness though, this is how all games should be made, particularly rpg's. They made a game that was mechanically and graphically interesting whilst also having a solid cast of characters and story.

They even polished it off with lots of little details that they didn't have to do, but they did it because it made the game better.

Amazing game by any measure or standard.

  9. Nice description of pixel blending! Buying or borrowing a CRT television is the only possible way to really see what old games look like. People celebrate pixel art, but they're cheering for 50% of the experience. Imagine how much they'll love old game graphics on a real proper screen.

  10. I first played Chrono Trigger when it came out and although I loved it, back then I was so accostumed to playing fantastic and innovative RPG/Adventure games of the 16-bit-era like LoZ – A link to the past, FF6, Ogre Battle – The march of the black Queen, SoM, Shining Force 2, Phantasy Star 3 and Landstalker that I only realized just how unbelievably good it is over time. FF6, despite being way more glitchy and unpolished in some areas, is still my favourite game ever because of its unbeatable storytelling, but CT is the best RPG I've ever played overall and probably the best game I've ever played in general. It is timeless, a rich and varied experience, has excellent replay value, tight and functional gameplay mechanics, a unique style, beautiful graphics and sound, a masterfully crafted story that never drags or diverts from its main plot and at a net-playtime of roughly twenty hours you'll even find the time to breeze through it with a full-time-job. If you're a gamer and haven't played it, you're missing out.

  11. I always say this is my favorite game of all time. I don't know if that is true really, but it is what I feel. I will always remember Chrono Trigger, as a 12 year old, was the first game that made me cry. Not because of any devastating sad moment. I cried at the end of the game, when all of my friends, who I adventured with and grew with said good-bye and left for their own times and lives. It is something that will stick with me forever.

  12. I plyed this 20+ years ago. Watching this video I got all the way through to the main branch dattle agaisnt Lavos. Then just gave up because after like 20 – 30 minutes nothing seemed to be happening. Thought the game was bugged and didnt touch it since. Was no opportunity to search for how long is this boss supposed to last…

  13. To this day when I think of all the characteristics that make a game a contender for 'best game of all time' which includes, gameplay, fun-factor, replayability, writing/story, characters, and music, its hard to find any game that can legit claim to possibly score a 10/10 in all of those categories and thus cementing Chrono Trigger as a mighty contender for GOAT. I think only a few games could possibly approach close to this in different regards, Breath of the Wild, the first Metal Gear Solid, Maybe Witcher III, but Chrono Trigger really stands the test of time.

  15. Chrono Trigger, The Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy IV have always been my favorite game RPGS. I remember spending so much time in my youth playing those games while unlocking all their secrets. Truly classics of an era and the SNES console. All with great story telling, gameplay, and timeless enjoyment.

  16. Oh yeah, discussions on AI in 1995….in gaming. This game is the best of all time because it ushered in the future of games. And while by todays standards it may seem simple, that doesn’t detract from its effectiveness

  17. Fantastic game. I imported a US copy of the game (as well as Super Mario RPG) and a SNES region free cartridge back in the day to play this (as well as a SNES that had a 50/60Hz switch mod, that died unfortunately since RIP), as NINTENDO NEVER DANG BOUGHT THE GAME OUT IN EUROPE ON THE SNES!! TRAVESTY!! I still get it out now and then and play it, and also have the DS rebuild. Fantastic game, and I'm glad to be able to say I'm someone who's actually played it, rather than merely heard of it. Some of the music, such as Frog's theme still stands out to me to the point I occasionally whistle it randomly, even 20 years after first playing it, and some of the lighting and graphical effects were truly very ingenious ways of, as you put it, hinting at a larger more grandiose story/environment than they could truly represent with the hardware at the time.
Absolute joy to play! I am actually surprised you didn't spend more time on the soundtrack. For a SNES title it was a really great effort here, as well as visually.

  18. A couple of additional awesome notes. You can actually battle Lavos as soon as you can have access to the teleports in Lynn square but clicking the sparkle on the other pad (new game + only) and provides a pretty cool ending, each character has unique dialogue for important moments ( Crono' revival, battle with Zeal, etc.), there wre other stones you can get that unlock some awesome tripple techs, And a few other unique interactions depending on who's in your party. On top of that if you venture into the DS version or beyond new game + new dungeons shows what was probably intended for the clones Zeal made and wraps up Schala's story well leading into Chrono Cross. Loved the review of my favorite game ever good sir!

  19. Something to note about the bike race, is that switching the side the viewer spectates from, will switch what direction you appear to travel from. Put another way, if you watch someone go North from the East they look to be going right. If you watch someone go North from the West though, they will appear to go left.

This doesn't really make it less jarring, but it does mean you could still be going the proper direction, just that you are looking at it from a different direction.

  20. Just a side note about the beginning when you talk about the composer, there's the picture of Nobuo Uematsu, but the music was mainly composed Yasunori Mitsuda. It was his first gig at Square as a composer, after doing sound effects for other games for the company. He was overwhelmed though, that's why Nobuo Uematsu also composed a few tracks.

  21. You talked about combat mechanics, but there's one you never mention and none of the comments have either. Some enemy counter attacks can only occur when they're hit by an attack from close by or from far away. Gato in the fair, and both Yakra fights have a mechanic like this. You did mention that enemies move around during the battle, but that is one of the most important reasons to pay attention to it.
