As individuals we all have a part to play we too could reduce are demand on imported foodstuffs…which has obvious benefits not only to the worlds food supply but also our health and environment…it was prudent before but now even more so that we grow some food ourselves…not necessarily wheat but other food groups lessening our dependency on grain… easy grain crops to grow on small gardens could include corn on the cob… not just cabbage… No
Agriculturally the new Advice to French Farmers is to overproduce Grain this season… since the war has seriously diluted world grain supplies… that was originally propped up by Ukraine the breadbasket of Europe…who fed an estimated 400 million people… some farms in France will sow on land that was to be left fallow… though fertilizers are expensive and hard to get.. it too imported from Ukraine and Russia…

Very well said, waste less and if anyhow possible, grow something. When growing up, I was told again and again how my mom grew up during WWII and had to live from potatoe peels that richer people gave them and therefore, I could never waste food and it hurts me to see how much is being thrown away constantly. We could save so much if we would stop or at least reduce that.
I saw a video called "Global Agriculture Collapse | Peter Zeihan" that explains how drastic the situation is. You have to take everything Peter Zeihan says with a grain of salt but here, he does a good job at explaining the reasons behind the current crisis, why it will take some time and how serious it is: "Assuming there won't be any further disruptions, we probably only have enough fertilizer to support a population of 6 billion which means we're looking at 2 billion people entering chronic malnutrition." Everything we do not waste can be exported somewhere else and help there.
The world produces more than enough food to feed its human population. However the same population does not distribute this food either equitably or efficiently amongst itself. The proverbial Martian observer would be forgiven for assuming that humans, in fact, have a perversely vested interest as a species in ensuring that a large proportion of them must necessarily starve to death consistently. And they wouldn't be far wrong.
As long as geopolitical considerations outweigh all others, and people restrict their view of the world they inhabit through this restrictive prism, then "food security" itself becomes an oxymoron and a highly deceptive term. A "security" achieved within one arbitrarily defined geopolitical entity that condemns others to starvation is one that can hardly merit the term in the context of the survival of humanity itself.
When, in some distant future, another species inherits our dubious mantle of being the most "intelligent" on this planet, and its own archaeologists and palaeontologists begin to unearth the evidence of our ignominious decline and spectacularly violent self-imposed extinction, they may puzzle for a while over what triggered such a cataclysmic orgy of self-hatred that finally engulfed us and wiped us from this earth. Then they will discern from the faint traces of our existence how we so abjectly failed to do something as basic as feed ourselves throughout our short tenure, and it will all make sense to them
It´s getting hard here too, I´ve been thinking of looking for an old farm or whatever I can just to live in the countryside, unfortunally I lack the funds, we´ll see, but I am growing more and more unsatisfied with city living and my job.

Cabbage soup is perfect thai style: fresh ginger and chili, soya, (wild) mushrooms and some meat, if one fansies. Cut the cabbage into thin pieces and drop them into boiling water for a minute and take off the heat.
I should like to know what the viewers think of Allotments, Jardins ouvriers, Schrebergärten etc. Are there still many? It was an interesting idea, though of course concerning only a small part of any given city population. As the French term indicates, they were intended for working people. Many have been built over I believe. A friend of mine had one at Garches (near Paris) up to 20 years ago. There was a waiting list and according to the rules, the occupiers had to have a balance of flowers and vegetables. Maybe I'm wrong, but I got the impression that it was quite 'bobo'.
for years I have vegetables in cement tubs two tubs next to each other with some space between them and then another on the edges of those two tubs so you have a double layer I have 19 tubs along the edge of my yard. I grow there everything from carrots to leeks. drill holes in the bottoms of the tubs otherwise they will become mini swamps ;o))

If you are really interested in the fertilizer situation, don't focus on Nitrogen based stuff, but check the phosphorus situation.
There is a real phosphorus crisis, and it gets worse each year. There is an endless supply of nitrogen, 80% of the air is nitrogen. Phosphorus is running out very fast and until now it cannot be replaced by anything. Phosphorus could be the first element where man has destroyed all natural resources. The next could be helium – not needed for fertilizers, but for hundreds of technical usages.
We know that the revolution in Egypt was linked with a weaker harvest in the Ukraine so this tells us that the consequences of the invasion of Ukraine could lead to political destabilisation in several less developed countries risking chaos and, even, war and, of course, more misery and refugee crises.
Re the food issue 25% of all the wheat sold on the international market comes or rather came from Russia and Ukraine so if Russia conquers Ukraine that will give Russia a huge Amount of international"clout"on top of their hydrocarbon sales which is not good for anyone. As for the UK the biggest issues include but are not limited to:: First the vast amount of cultivable land that is held as sporting estates,or merely as private estates plus of course the land wasted as golf courses. Second the fact that the average UK subject lives in towns or cities and has about as much knowledge about growing or rearing food as a piece of rock(for them food comes from a supermarket and regular surveys have proven that over half of UK subjects have no idea where food comes from and that includes adults who think bacon grows on a Bush or tree). Third there is the looming water shortage in the South and South East of England caused by overextraction of water from the underground aquifers. Finally is the fact that ever since the early 1800s England has imported more than half it's food(Scotland,Wales and Northern Ireland are all self sufficient indeed export food to England)and in fact England has not been able to feed itself since the 1600s
