“Walt, please. Everyone calls me by my first name.”
In her autobiography, Peggy Lee tells the story of the day she met Walt Disney:
“Sonny Burke called one day in the early 1950’s and asked if I’d like to write a score with him for Disney.
Sonny and I went out to the studios to meet the great man. Charming? Yes, he was. The first thing he said in reply to ‘Mr. Disney’ was, ‘Walt, please. Everyone calls me by my first name.’
Good heavens, how could I call this great man by his first name, but I did.”
Walt Disney saw magic in Peggy Lee’s talent. She wasn’t just a singer for ‘Lady and the Tramp’ – she wrote songs (with Sonny Burke), shaped characters, and helped craft the film’s heart. One of the first artists Disney trusted with real creative control, Peggy Lee helped transform a cartoon into musical storytelling.
