Cydonia is a colony on Mars in the Sol system. It is the most important mining settlement in United Colonies territory. The ore that Cydonia produces is not only used in construction projects across the Settled Systems, but it is also the main source of metal used by Deimos Staryards Inc to manufacture ships for the UC Navy.
Cydonia has the distinction of being humanity’s oldest extraterrestrial colony. It was founded in 2112 in the Cydonia region of Mars by Deimos Staryards Inc to extract ore for ship construction. Due to the naturally inhospitable environment of the Martian surface, most of the city was built underground.
Cydonia remains vital to the interests of the United Colonies in 2330, even though Earth has long been abandoned and Sol is widely considered to be a backwater inhabited only by miners and Spacers. Mining operations take place around the clock, although an ordinance was recently enacted to limit particle detonations, which are used in subterranean fracking, to between the hours of 0600 and 1800 local time. Particle detonations can occur multiple times during this period and visibly shake the colony and its immediate surroundings. Residents and visitors are alerted when detonations are planned to occur, and are advised to brace themselves for the turbulence.
