Voice of the Arts | Mason Bates

Mason Bates joins Jim Cunningham to talk about his Pittsburgh premiere of Philharmonia Fantastique on March 5th at 7pm, commissioned in part by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. This mixed-media concerto has won a Grammy in its Chicago Symphony recording and has become Mason Bates’ most performed piece. Philharmonia Fantastique portrays the four families of the orchestra as it showcases how powerful an entire orchestra is when all the instruments play together. This family friendly piece echoes Fantasia or Peter and the Wolf, which is perfect for the PSO’s Schooltime performances March 6th to the 8th at 10:30AM. Mason also highlights his next opera, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, for The Metropolitan Opera based on Michael Chabon’s novel of the same name and his life in San Francsico.
