Visiting the King of Ant Island

I live a weird life. Meeting a down to earth king, being personally driven to his private island for the night, all so that I can say thank you to an organization most of you will have never heard of before. So that maybe you might even think about someday how you might want to bring your conservation skills to Micronesia and donate your time and experience to a Rohsa just trying to do the right thing.

If you’d like to help by sending an email (or donating) to OneReef, you have my sincere thanks: [email protected]

If you’d like to take it a step further and visit Ant the hard way (have a genuine desire and plan to help) – let me know. I’ll be sure to push you in the Rohsa’s direction.

Thanks for watching everyone and have a great holiday – we’ll be back after xmas.

  1. One of the few channels I have notifications on for and part of an even smaller group I signed up on patreon for. I always appreciate the content and the effort put into the stories

  2. Evan thank you for the work that you do and the work it takes to get your videos out there. Your channel is such a refreshing calm meditative pause from the rest of YouTube. You've cultivated a community here where we think about giving thanks for a video. Something, frankly in our binge watching, mass video producing culture, hasn't crossed my mind in a long time. Thank you for reminding us in the best way possible to give thanks ✨ cheers to you, your team, and to Ant!

  3. I don't understand how this channel doesn't have 4 million subscribers. You're one of the best "In the weeds" film-makers I've come across. If you truly do read every comment, know that one reef is going to be a few dollars wealthier today thanks to you. Despite my wallet's best wishes.

  4. I'm going to defend my current King and remind people Charles III is famously an avid gardener & dedicated farmer who did a lot of the actual, physical work to build up the gardens of his estates, & does the work of actually running his farms – & put out his own wealth to build thousands of new, traditionally built homes in the royal Duchy of Lancaster. So he also acts the good King in some ways, like this King.

So I'm also going to applaud this King, this Rosha: He's ruling the right way, the true kingly way, looking forward for his people. I can only wish him and his the best of luck.

Love this channel, what you l've done with it, and all the fantastic stories you've brought to light.

  5. Modern-day British Royal Family members often serve in the military at some point, and I'm sure that involves some physical labour. Prince William served, and went on to fly as a helicopter pilot with East Anglian Air Ambulance for around two years.

  6. This channel does incredible work. I hope one day to be able to do something approaching the good you do. And I hope that if I ever do get do at least visit this amazing island, that I'm able to do something good while I'm there. I'm going to keep trying.

  8. I fear the (Poly, Micro, Mela) "nesias" are under threat for their cultures being subsumed. China is a big threat because they throw money around, but it is indebted money. Can't pay the interest? Well, now we own you. Pretty Mafia-like.

  10. I have just set up a 20$ monthly donation to OneReef. This is about as much as I can help right now. But I'll make sure to keep you in mind to see if I can help more in the future. I see that this is a marathon.

  12. Thanks for another great video Evan. Your series has been my favorite for many years now! As someone dedicated to conservation of tiny islands and atolls that nobody has ever heard of, these recent videos have been especially exciting to watch. I really hope you can make it out to Palmyra Atoll sometime. (I can help you get in touch with the right people if you're interested)

  13. Sometimes I watch YouTube videos where I find myself exceptionally angry that I cannot give it more accolade than a Like and a comment. YouTube should have a once-a-month-burner "Super Like" for when you see that video of: "Yeah. This is the one. This one right here. This person needs to be funded to continue doing this."

  14. The most humble monarch I've ever heard of.

William Hawley's story reminds me of the Afro-Bolivian Monarchy, a ceremonial chiefdom officially recognized by the Bolivian government in 2008, and led by King Julio Pinedo. This dynasty arose among imported enslaved African people who were put to work in Bolivia. One of these slaves was recognized by his fellow enslaved people as belonging to one of the African royal families, and upon emancipation they rallied around him as a leader in his community. Today King Julio runs a small store and farm in his village of Muruata, deep in the Andean jungles of Bolivia. Though he lacks any official power, he serves as an ambassador of the historically marginalized Afro-Bolivian culture. The Afro-Bolvian Monarchy is the the only remaining monarchy within the Americas.

If your journeys ever take you to Bolivia, @RareEarthSeries , you should definitely check it out!

  15. Do they need medical volunteers? I recently finished med school and would love to visit FSM or other pacific islands someday, They just look so serene and beautiful compared to the islands where I live (or at least as depicted by your videos). Maybe volunteering would be a good excuse to visit lmao. Although I'm practically a green horn and would probably need a bit more experience.

  16. This is my first year with your site and I've watched almost all of the videos from oldest to latest. Your Micronesia segment is my absolute favorite for personal reasons. Thank you for bringing this amazing part of the world and it's people to your stage! One Reef has a new social media follower and my donation. Cheers ~

  17. I adore your content for the reason I feel I’d never see these kinds of places, events, and tragedies without it. I hope you’re able to continue doing what you do for as long as you’re able and willing to.

Videos like these make me wish I was rich. Being able to simply give these people something like the gymnasium they’d like, or assistance with repopulating the island. Without asking for anything in return besides seeing their smiles. Maybe someday.
