How great a pilot was Captain Eric (Winkle) Brown. His flying skills are unsurpassed Me163 to the largest German aircraft. His humble opinion of his abilities makes listening to him so enjoyable.
“Strategic bombing doesn’t work.” That’s the whole game in a nutshell. One of the most favorite games of history buffs is “what if Germany……..?” What if they had a nuke? What if they hadn’t invaded Russia? What if they’d won at Stalingrad? What if they had an America bomber? Nice intellectual exercises but rather pointless. If they’d deployed a squadron of America bombers, it would’ve failed just like their Third Reich was destined to fail. They had interesting technology, and some seriously effed up social philosophy, and they were being lead by a dipshit corporal. The perfect recipe for failure.
Imo it was a bonehead move to allow the soviets anywhere near top-shelf US weaponry and tech. Of course in hindsight this is easily acknowledged,but even at the time there were those who realized that the USSR was going to be a problem. G.S. Patton knew, Marshall had some inklings, and Harry S. Truman was well aware of Soviet aspirations and Stalin's desire for communist dominion. The B-29 should have been kept well clear of any chance of the USSR acquiring copies of this next-level aircraft
Does anyone know how tall the hauls of these big ships are, for example, cruise ships, cargoshilps such as the Edmund Fitzgerald, the muchin (mentioned here), etc.
What would have happened if Germany was able to bomb the US? The same thing that happened when Japan did it.
