He's using humor as a defense mechanism but the reality of being jumped in NYC leaves emotional and psychological trauma beyond the physical. The elderly man they were targeting probably looked so helpless/ traumatized for Adam to step in. He needs to press charges – from all sources I've read, there are no presses being charged and these teen mobs are free to do as they will to another person :/
