  1. There's no replacement for mountain training, and I mean the real thing. Not "cold weather training" or "rappelling". I read the X report right after the Rangers finished the battle, and they thought they were post-holing in waist deep snow lying at an angle of 45 degrees, which they were wrong about. My point is, we made our boys suffer and expected sheer toughness to be a cure for altitude, which is wrong like a dog in a cat's crib. It is so very wrong – the army needs to understand its terrain and they didn't in this battle. No disrespect meant for the individual soldier – it was an operational failure.
