In this video, we speak to Vijay Prashad about the changing material conditions of contemporary imperialism. Vijay sheds light on a number of topics, including Palestine, Donald Trump, NATO, and Ukraine. Throughout, Vijay elaborates his theory of Hyperimperialism to help us better understand the political economy of the 2020s, obscene military spending, the US-dominated world order, the successes of the right, and the motives of elites in maintaining a highly asymmetric and violent system.
Vijay Prashad is the director of The Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, and the author of some of our favorite books concerning Imperialism such as The Darker Nations: A People’s History of the Third World and Washington Bullets: A History of the CIA, Coups, and Assassinations.

1:08:42 What?? Deng Xiaoping was committed to socialism and also oversaw the mass mobilisation of the Chinese working class into privatised industries with diminishing worker rights beholden to foreign capital? As much as I appreciate this analysis of imperialism or hyperimperialism I am nonetheless incredibly suspicious of the tendencies of anti-imperialists to make ideological defences for the geopolitical interests of lesser or emerging imperialist powers outside of the West. For example, let’s not pretend that peace in Ukraine is a fully neutral arbiter here, as much as it is desired to end the war. The question remains ‘Peace to the service of whom?’
I love when foreigners talk about American politics, it's like third graders angrily discussing calculus….. The bulk of the modern conservative party is the 90's liberal…. the overton window has shifted the left into complete lunacy. A real "far-right" party – or sentiment- does not exist. The left has become the party of men in women's sports, censorship, open borders, child mutilation, climate hysteria, taxes, and THANK GOD… the party of war…. which is exactly why they are now being endorsed by the warmongers that always made me loathe the GOP – George Bush and Dick Cheney. People like Trump because he was the first president in almost 4 decades to not start any wars…. that alone makes him objectively the best president in modern history. And btw, EVERY COUNTRY should have a strong sense of nationalism. But our countries educational system has been overrun with Marxists ideologues that convince our youth to hate the greatest nation on Earth. "Anti-immigration hysteria"???? WHAT WORLD ARE YOU LIVING IN???? what number is too much??? How do you stay a country without borders…. if our country is soo horrible, oppressive, and racist, why are they even coming… ?? And anti-immigration (anti ILLEGAL immigration and in Europe anti- government mandated immigration) sentiments are not exclusive to the west…. Europeans are also starting to see the catastrophic effects of unbridled immigration…. look at France and Germany…. I was in Italy this year, and many cities felt more like India or Bangladesh than Italy…. these countries are losing their national identity by allowing unrelenting streams of foreigners
who are unwilling to assimilate – infest and overrun their countries. I spent the last 4 years traveling Europe because I did not want to fund Biden's war machine, and the contrast between the normal people and the "highly educated" could not be more stark. These "PhDs" with their delusional takes are completely detached from reality…. but like they saythose who can't do – teach… lol or write books. OH, and criticizing Elon Musk as being a bad "idea man"…. who tf did the left have?!? We don't even know who was running the country while Bide was in office…. what a joke. I wouldn't expect much engagement in your channel…. no one is buying the trash anymore.Vijay and I share a similar background in early Dead Kennedys-style late Lagerkapitalist anti-professionalatariatismo. Comrade Vijay, you deliver brilliance everywhere you go. Many thanks. ❤
Really enjoyed your questions and your sincerity to shed light on the current conditions in the world while at the same time being motivated to make the world we live in a better place.
Staemer is supporting the genocidal regime in Israel and then tries to lecture China about 'human rights' — Starmer is a sad figure.
