Vietnam War Chopper Pilot – Larry Freeland



Operation Lam Son 719 or 9th Route – Southern Laos Campaign was a limited-objective offensive campaign conducted in the southeastern portion of the Kingdom of Laos.

During Lam Son 719, there were over 750 helicopters involved, most of which was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. The 101st had 84 of its aircraft destroyed and another 430 damaged. The aftermath of Lam Son 719 were a total of 108 helicopters destroyed and 618 helicopters classified as having sustained battle damage with American helicopter aircrews having flown more than 160,000 sorties.

Larry Freehand served one tour in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division as an Infantry Officer and a CH-47 helicopter pilot. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, with 10 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Starts, the Bronze Star Medal, and various other military service medals.
