I'm pretty sure when Steven was shooting the drug users, those bullets would've hit the chimney(?) he was propping the gun on. The angle just seems like it would hit the stump.
Something fun y'all might look into for animators react is The Legend Of Vox Machina, specifically the difference in the 3D models between S1 and S2. Apparently, the dragon in S1 was done completely in 3D, whereas in S2 they used 2D hand drawn animation for the mouths, while the rest was done with 3D rendering. I think both look good, but there is a noticeable difference between the two seasons.

My company had to add holes back in to rifles. In many shots I could pull doner portions of the outer barrel and slide it over to the tracked mask of the plugged barrel. No cloudy amorphous hole for us 👍
