VFTB 3/17/24: Iron and Myth 27 – The Gods of War

SOME OF THE MOST epic stories from the ancient world deal with the wars of the gods. It’s not a coincidence that one of the most commonly used titles for God in the Bible is β€œLord of hosts,” which literally means β€œYahweh of armies.”

Doug Van Dorn (www.douglasvandorn.com), author of Giants: Sons of the Gods, Dr. Judd Burton (www.BurtonBeyond.net), author of Interview With the Giant, and Brian Godawa (www.Godawa.com), best-selling author of the new novel Cruel Logic, join us to discuss warrior gods of the ancient world like Ares/Mars, Inanna/Ishtar, Baal/Zeus/Jupiter, and the violent old gods the Titans, and how their motives differ from those of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

We also talk about how we Christians, believing in a loving God who’s willing to forgive those who repent and accept Him as Lord, can reconcile the image of Jesus as the suffering servant with the depiction of Yahweh the warrior.

  1. Could you guys please do a show on the 7 angels in Enoch and how that ties in with all of the 7 headed monsters in mythology? Are these different from the angels that sinned in Genesis 6? Who are they???

  2. Try, Lord of War. Singular. As in singularity. As in I'm the demiurge. The sun God among you. But I'm not the all powerful God. I'm the son. It's just as good most days. Yah is my everlasting heavenly Father enthroned in the sun. You all clearly do not know him. If you did, you'd know me. I'm Sol Invictus. The personification of the sun is another way to say Incarnation of the sun. Nobody seems to give a shyt, so don't wonder why my Heavenly father is gathering the nations for battle. I'm the son of perdition. It means destruction. I don't come to bring peace. But a sword. But judgement. But anarchy. And I AM THAT I AM THE SON OF MAN

  3. Submission doesn't mean groveling and mewling under an oppressive boot. It means trusting in the authority of a husband to walk in the way the Lord would have for him and his wife. It means defering to a husband's stalwart strength and rationality to make choices and decisions with a holy reverence unto God. Submitting means trusting a husnand for a correct path and reasoning under the covering provided by the Lord. Submission to a husband is ultimately submission to the authority of God. Submission is a guarantee of safety, security and strength but truthfully God must be the head before all else.

  4. The Holy Trinity. Jesus said β€œI and the father are one” so in Jesus when he was on earth as a man . I was the creator who was nailed to the cross to forgive humanity for being a stiff necked people.

  5. Revelation 19:11-15

Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.

  6. I absolutely LOVE the passage Brian talks about around 34:00 (Colossians 2:13-15). It is one of my favorite passages in the New Testament because it tells us EXACTLY what happened on the Cross and how we, as followers of Him, can be assured that Christ HAS ALREADY triumphed over the dark forces. THAT is the truest and most powerful spiritual warfare EVER! πŸ™ŒπŸ»

  8. This has always been about what God is doing. Ephesians 1:5, 2:8-9 reflect also in 1 peter 1:5 and 2:8-9. These go back to what Christ spoke of in John chapter 6:44,65 in verse 66 many of His own disciples left and would no longer follow Him. You should be asking why? Paul became Paul because Christ revealed Himself. Galations 1:15,16. Abraham believed God because God worked it all out that way, his faith is not his own, niether is yours or mine. Revelation 22:11

  9. East indian people have movies of many series about their god Shiva and other gods and how they fight with humans. Half elephant half human, a woman with multiple arms; killing humans, fighting with each other. It's already abhorring to see such abominations but in movies they are personified by men and women with make up, golden jewellry….. hindus believe there are 33 million gods..

  10. The reason Jesus didn't act like a commander of armies is because He came here to take the form of a servant and do His Father's will on the earth.

He didn't come to speak in His own name the first time, He came to be a servant and a sacrifice for many. Hence why we call this the "Age of Grace". But God's Word is clear that He will return as a conquering King, executing judgment on all those who rejected Him and had pleasure in lawlessness.

Jesus wasn't a pushover. He was on a specific mission but when the time comes for His return, His robe will be dipped in the blood of His enemies, and in that day every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord and Messiah, to the glory of the Father. Amen.
