Using Compression is Considered Cheating? – Escape From Tarkov

I asked about whether I should make an audio compression video about what compression is and tools that people can use for both hardware and software to compress their own audio and save their hearing, and the conversation turned into one in which people believe that audio compression provides an unfair advantage.

I do not believe this to be the case, and this video discusses all of those concerns on a high level and the reasons why those arguments do not, in my opinion, hold water.

  1. NOTE – THIS VIDEO IS AN OVERVIEW – IT IS NOT INTENDED TO BE AN IN-DEPTH GUIDE ON HOW TO ENGINEER PROFESSIONAL-GRADE COMPRESSION.
If you would like an extremely simple solution that should help a great deal without installing any additional software, enable "loudness equalization" in windows. There is a very easy-to-follow tutorial on microsoft's website: https://bit.ly/3KLq4uq

  2. I use windows loudness equalization and have for the last 4 years. When it has become disabled In the past footsteps are nearly inaudible and gunshots are ear piercing. I feel bad for uncompressed gamer ears.

  3. What is cheating? Abusing glitches or using external programs to gain advantage in any form over other players. So yes, it's cheating. But I would say it's good kind of cheats because of health

  4. Lmao I wish I used this for my 1k hours, I just got used to everyone being able to hear better than me, over destroying my ear drums, this would also help in csgo a lot as I need footstep audio but a full ak spray at any footstep audible volume is taking 5 years off your hearing per ak spray lmao

  5. So… you make the argument (rightly) that sound compression is already in the game in the form of headsets. And those, as we know, have differing costs… which establishes the fact that BSG recognise that there is an advantage of certain audio compression over other kinds. Much like a stock M4A1 has an advantage over a stock ADAR… and, as we all know, you pay for that advantage in-game. What you are advocating for is sound compression that allows you to avoid paying for top tier headsets and therefore give you a financial in-game advantage. So… answer me this… how is third party software that compresses sound any better than third party macro software that turns your ADAR into an M4A1?

  6. Great video man! For a while I've been recommending Equalizer APO with Peace GUI to all my friends. It has changed so many things for all of us. Makes everything sound so much better, and not just on Tarkov.

  7. So what you’re saying is that compression of gamer equivalent to wearing or not wearing ear pro when shooting real guns? Because honestly this is the reason I own a pair of the walker razors and try my best to only use those in game. If no one has ever used electronic ear pro then you are missing out. This game is by far the closest to what irl electronic ear pro truly sounds and acts like.

Isn't that a mechanic that's already in-game, with headsets having various ambient sound muffling in order to pick up on specific details better?
If it is how I'm thinking, having that effect separate from the game itself, it would indeed be a game-changer as it could be a layered effect, to help pick up things better than the highest quality (in-game) headset could by itself.

Or am I thinking of it backwards?

  9. Definitely disagree, it's pretty simple, don't have your volume so high you damage your hearing…. The main argument here is not too far from everyone else has aimbot, so I have to as well. I get killed all the time from people whose footsteps I can't hear, and it sucks balls, but I personally don't think boosting quieter sounds (which gives you an advantage) should be the norm. Definitely soft cheating.

  10. It would be interesting to see exactly how you set up your compression, as i'm sure you know compression can be quite the complex tool to use and is often times misused. A note i'd like to add when it comes to compression is that if you set a very high ratio and compress audio on the master track (like when you compress all the audio from a video game) that creates distortion which is very damaging to human hearing. Like you said yourself, older music wasn't compressed as heavily due to limitations in the analog technology, today with digital audio we can basically compress it how hard we want to, and that lead to the infamous loudness war and is very damaging to hearing. Loud sudden noises, like a hammer hitting a nail or a gunshot is extremely loud IRL and dangerous, but if treated correctly and implemented into a video game it is no longer as unsafe. Long exposure to hard compression and EQ that enhances frequencies around 3 kHz is on the other hand very damaging. Interesting topic nonetheless, and I agree that this is not cheating in any way and people should be very careful using compressors if they dont know what they are doing.

  11. 32 yo with quite significant tinnitus here. The ringing in my right ear is quite bad at times, especially if I haven't slept well, am dehydrated, stressed etc. Different people and hardware definitely have different baseline abilities to produce and distinguish certain sounds. I could certainly see myself using this to be able to lower the overall volume (in order to take care of my ear health long term) while still being able to pick up the same amount of footsteps etc as usual.

That said, there's nothing stopping someone without my disadvantage from using it to raise their abilities to make out sounds as well. It can enhance performance for sure. I wouldn't call it a cheat, no more than I would call it a cheat to have a better pc, a shorter response time monitor, a less annoying cat sitting on their desk etc. They could all be said to be on the spectrum of performance modifying factors going into our overall performance in the game. But none of them give you access to something that isn't made available by the game – so let's not waste energy calling this a cheat while there are people with radars, aimbots, wallhacks and god knows what.

Still, having a healthy discussion about it doesn't hurt 🙂 Good vid, Onepeg!

  12. Most Corsair headsets run with a software called iCue, which allows you to have Audio Equalisation pre-sets I don't run any but I can see why someone would, I would say it's an advantage over someone not running the equaliser but it's not a crazy difference and the advantage you get playing with crisper audio actually damages your ears even more so, it's kind of gain something to lose something I guess, If you have tinnitus, it will drastically worsen your condition as much as this game does above any other game in the world anyway, you could also ease your condition and make it less harsh too, Cut some LOWS, and cut 5000-11000 a little and cut 1700 too a little

  13. Really good info here, I think that audio in eft is being overlooked most of the times. Most of us are busy with fps and post fx settings. This could really help to smooth out the sound while protecting you ears. Thanks for this vid. Awesome content 👏

  14. 2 things:

Remember them banning nvidia postfx and adding their own solution?

Using a Programm to do things that are meant to be done using ingame items(comtacs) is kinda cheating.

That said tarkovs sound is way to loud and needs a solution

  15. I mean Landmark uses $1200+ ear buds and probably a good reason why he hears EVERYONE before they hear him.

Many ways to gain an advantage in Tarkov (which is not an esport guys)

I’m 35 and have typical hearing loss for my age I’ve found from tests, sucks but yeah wish I didn’t.

Dynamic Range options is just like different levels of Compression in a game right?

I actually use the voicemeeter banana volume hook keys bound to my mouse so I can adjust the volume in Tarkov constantly because of how ridiculously loud the stupid gunshot sounds are ingame because Nikita wants us all deaf.

Now how do we use compression ingame? I need a tutorial Onepeg lol thought we’d get some of that in this video.

  16. I play a lot of Cod Warzone and pay attention to the "community" there I also play Tarkov. It's funny to see parallels in some of the complaints between the two, a lot of people consider aim assist, using a nice headset to sound whore, having a scuf controller with extra buttons, etc all cheating. Which is ridiculous imo, people are weird.

  17. I suffer with tinnitus and poor hearing in general. It makes any in game sounds an issue, its just something I have to live with. I'm pretty sure this was the result of blasting my ears wearing headphones over my lifetime, with music and in games. I don't find Tarkov any worse than any other game tbh. I will defo look into compression. 👍

  18. See I really need some help/guide on getting more soft volume in game, me being hearing impaired and having hearing aids in both ears, I sometimes struggle with really soft sounds that people make, even with my volume on blast, using good in game comtacs and using Audio Technica ath-m50x

  19. I can remember rolling with my buds when we started playing Tarkov, and I was wondering how tf they would hear shit from miles away. So I cranked up the Audio to a point of wincing whenever a gunfigh broke out, so I could physically tighten up my external auditory canal to protect my hearing, only to hear what my friends could hear.

This kind of worked for me for some time until I played the Vepr-Hunter .308 on Factory. Shooting that thing in an enclosed space hurt so bad, that I literally threw my Headphones through the room mid fight.

Kind of ironic that I worked for a company that manufactured high-end hearing protection at that time. Now I´m running at 70% instead of 100% audio. I may can not hear all the footsteps but uhh..yea…I may be able to hear my loved ones when I´m getting older.

Protect your hearing guys, it´s not getting any better.
