US considering plan to help Australia acquire nuclear subs sooner

The United States is reportedly considering a plan to help Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear-powered submarines years ahead of schedule.

12 months on from the landmark AUKUS agreement, the proposal could see Australia’s first boats built in America – plugging a severe capability gap while domestic production is ramped up.

  1. Waste of money and too little to late, because basically we need them now.

The nature of modern warfare is rapidly changing.
China will have developed hypersonic torpedoes, or underwater missiles that will reach a speed of 360km/h in a couple of years, effectively rendering the current crop of nuclear Attack submarines useless.

Submarines are primarily offensive not defensive and we are far better off looking at other types of deterrence.

One immediate solution might be to equip our Collins Class subs with smaller tactical nukes and extend their range without having to refuel as often.

  2. No domestic production. Just buy the damn things. Fit out a domestic maintenance facility only, you'll get enough jobs and political points & photo ops , plus enough high paying jobs to inject tax into the economy. Get over your wet dreams of building it here.

The skipper of the USS Nautilus. It was making its world record under water cruise. The skipper smiled. The Japanese skipper had seèn a Kaju. A very…..very dangerous sea monster. More then ever.

  6. What is the known manufacturing timeline from haul laid Down to commissioning into active service first Astute 2001 commissioned 2010 9 years, First Virginia Class 1999 commissioned 2004 5years as building production methods are streamlined the time is reduced. Australia has a Lot of Heavy Defense Industry Infrastructure to provide Capacity and competence compliance to Quality of Build for any selected design Astute or Virginia Class
there are short term alternatives .. Vanguard SSBN's .. or converted Ohio Class SSGN's with a payload of 154 or more Cruise Missiles would make cruising the Pacific a safer place .. and give China and the Pacific Island Leaders cause to Pause .. their Rhetoric ..

  7. If you Aussies want it soon, best get your dock workers and navy staff working along side US or UK folks for how to handle the parts… Over here in the states to work on a dock that deals with the subs you gotta go to sub school. Its a bit more then just getting the pink slip and letting you sail off in the subs… You all so need your docs and dry-docks to handle the subs…. Keep in mind.. The us only has a few company's that can make them. I think we can make 2 or 3 subs a year… So if the US Navy puts its subs on hold, right now it would take 3-4 years to get your 8 subs… And we gotta keep building are subs to replace ageing hulls that is getting removed from service/navy books…

  8. It would be good if Japan joins AUKUS then you have Uk Japan AUS USA navy all together. Even just Japan Uk and AUS can match the chinese Navy right now. In 2040 it might be different but right now with that group you have a Navy thats at least 3 times stronger than China and they know it
