There’s one thing you can never be trained for; even after years in the army and a couple in the marine field, I never believed how unforgiving the ocean could really be.
I was part of the convoy escorting some incoming ships in 2010. By that time, I was already awarded an officer title in the coast guard and had influence over my peers. While that might sound amazing at first, trust me – you don’t want a whole crew of people looking to you for direction in the face of peril.
It was a crisp autumn morning when we set off in two boats. A cruise liner had radioed in their estimated arrival hour, and we had to make sure they approached the channel through a safe passage.
