The USS America docked in Brisbane on Tuesday and the arrival will bring thousands of marines ashore, giving them a brief break from their duties.

The USS America is the largest amphibious assault ship in the US Navy’s seventh fleet and is the first of several foreign military ships which will visit Queensland over the coming weeks.

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan discussed the ship’s arrival with Sky News Australia.

  11. Cant we as australians join together on anything. for fuck sake no where is perfect. But why are we prosecuting our own people? Who are willing to do what most cannot so that most shall not. What message are we sending to our enemies?

  13. The ship has probably been sent by Blinken to escort the Chinese warships and troopships to Taiwan and keep unruly Brit and other unruly nations at arms length.

  20. Assault ship… looks like a small carrier, which is what we should have.
    And it also should be nuclear powered to allow DEW's (Laser's) to be used repeatedly and eliminate fuel stops.

    Why waste $360 billion on submarines over the next 25 years, when 6 or so mutipurpose assault ships at far less cost and time to build, would easily serve our needs.

    Far more versatile for use in our region and Im sure such a vessel could deploy not only ground troops & vehicles, F35B's, but anti-submarine or anti-ship drones and/ or torpedos.

    * if you take a close look at the war in Ukraine, drones of all sorts are now playing a major role on both sides.
    And the oceans & seas will be no different.
