  1. Also, you talk about Ortegas taking on the role of Stiles and that not hurting Ortegas's character in the interim, but it should also be noted Ortegas was much less extreme than Stiles was in Balance of Terror. Ortegas immediately distrusted Spock, but it was measured and balanced by years of knowing and working with Spock. Stiles was obviously driven by bigotry, while Ortegas was clearly being driven by caution and simply took it too far, honestly reminiscent of the way Worf in TNG would often put forth more extreme strategies and suggestions mostly to give an alternative viewpoint and option.

It's a clever way of keeping the character who's distrusting of Spock in Balance of Terror, while also making sure Ortegas isn't acting completely out of character.

  2. My theory for una that she might do a Ashoka move. Federation try to ss forgiveness and pike ask her to come back etc or so. And she probably deny it and leave starfleet and Federation. And then many years when pike do end up in the chair, she'll come back maybe feeling regret or somewhat for leaving to after seeing him like that, to come said goodbye. Just my theory 🤷

  3. Spock got to call him "Chris" twice, but the second time is definitely the more important one.

The first time was after the mind meld. He then says, "You carry the weight of a terrible future, Chris." I feel like that one is a call FORWARD to the times Spock refers to Kirk as "Jim" on occasion.

  4. Using the Balance of Terror (being one of the best original series) was a bit of a risk for a season finally. It easily could have come off as ust riding the nostalgia of the original series for brownie points but lucky we got a really good what if scenario instead that took the premise in a new direction.

  5. Potential Cetacean Observation: Pike's non-violent actions results in war and so he realises that he has to end up in the beep chair. This is very similar to Edith Keeler, whose survival results in Germany winning WW2 because she strived for peace. Kirk realises that Keeler has to die.

  6. A truly outstanding series of Star Trek – although I found that James T Kirk looked too much like a young Jim Carrey for my liking – kept expecting him to start pulling silly faces!

  8. Brilliant episode in so many ways. But I just could not believe that this was Kirk. The Kelvin Kirk just had that swagger and way about him that I didn’t see in this portrayal. Disappointing casting

  9. Liked the series despite not being as excited for it as Picard but this episode was awful. And I say that as someone who's favourite episodes are mostly Romulan ones… The makeup for the Romulans looked like something out of Galaxy Quest, and thats the overriding feeling I got from this episode, Galaxy Quest. Don't get me wrong, great performances from the regular SNW cast who I LOVE, and so much drama and heart-wrench for Pike's turmoil, Una's dilemma and the brief moments we're treated to the presence of Uhura, La'aan, Chapel or Mbenga. But the Romulans 🤦‍♂️ and the hammy having the Romulan leader on their flagship. The Kirk-worship was clunky and flat. I wish the SNW cast had been given more screen time and the Romulans had been given the weight and depth they deserve as classic ST adversaries and characters
