Unyielding Novena to St. Sebastian: Shield Against Life’s Malicious Forces | Day Three.
With fearless determination, Sebastian proclaimed the faith during the perilous times of Christian persecution, addressing both pagans and believers. Inspired by the steadfast words of this devoted Christian soldier, many pagans embraced conversion and baptism, while others were awed by the incredible miracles he performed before their eyes. Not only did he heal their physical ailments, but he also persuaded them to accept baptism, become Christians, and lead virtuous Catholic lives. His actions soon drew attention, leading to accusations of his Christianity and his subsequent arrest. The emperor was incredulous upon hearing the news. “Sebastian? That impeccable officer and soldier? Sebastian, who has never betrayed my trust? He cannot, he must not be a Christian. But if it is true, I will easily change his mind,” he declared. When confronted by the emperor, Sebastian, unwavering and resolute, affirmed, “Yes, Lord, it is true. I am a Christian. What wrong do you see in that? What harm has it caused you? I have always been a Christian.” The emperor, attempting to persuade him, responded, “I speak as a friend to a friend—what do you wish for? Wealth, honor, a higher rank? You shall have it; just renounce this foolish faith in Christ.” Sebastian replied, “O Lord, what you offer is trivial and insignificant; I am richer than you can make me. The greatest honor I have received is being made a Christian.” Seeing his offers rejected, the emperor was consumed with rage. He ordered Sebastian to be stripped of his insignia, dishonored, imprisoned, and swiftly executed by being shot with arrows. Upon hearing these orders, Sebastian rejoiced, his face glowing with indescribable joy: he was about to die for Christ. He eagerly anticipated his martyrdom, which would unite him with his Savior.
