Unshakeable Novena to St. Sebastian: Guard Against Life’s Darkest Perils | Day Eight.
“The blood of the martyrs is the seed of Christians.” This ancient saying is as old as the church itself. During his life, Sebastian, through his words and miracles, led many to the font of baptism and ignited in the hearts of Christ’s followers the desire to die for Him. The miracle of conversion to the true faith was even more widespread after his death. The emperor, learning of this, aware of his powerlessness, ordered that the martyr’s body be thrown into a foul-smelling pit, where the carcasses of dead animals were discarded, to prevent the Christians from honoring their martyr. However, this vile intention of the emperor was thwarted, as the body, when being flung downward, was caught by a protruding branch of a tree. That very night, Sebastian appeared in a vision to a pious lady, St. Lucina, urging her to retrieve his body and bury it in the catacombs at the feet of the princes of the Apostles, Sts. Peter and Paul. On this spot, the Church of St. Sebastian was later built, where the relics of this martyr of Christ are kept to this day.
