Unifi Protect UNVR – Flashing light of Death Fix

My Unifi Protect UNVR Failed, being an early model it has the USB pen inside to run the system and it died, so time to replace it with a new USB pen and get it back up and running

Before anyone comments on the Hard disks – this is my own unit that gets poke, messed with, nuked and rebuilt alot, when we supply them they are full of WD Purples but you can use any SATA disk in these should you want

  1. Mine died about 3 weeks ago and I had it back up and running same day. Just had to swap the USB drive. Glad someone finally documented a “how to” video on repairing it. It wasn’t difficult to do, but I was on the forums page for a while looking at what other users have reported. Cheers mate!!

  2. Rubbish. Have my UNVR for about 6 months. MAjority of the time I had issues with it. What's the point of having a security system if it fails :'D

Thanks anyways for pointing it out, was looking for the cause of the flickering white LED for a while now.

  3. thanks same happened to mine, easy fix, They could just send out a new USB as a DIY reading the threads across the internet this is a WELL known issue does UNIFI no favours when they do nothing about it. Thanks for the "how to" fix.

  4. what a piece of junk… mine just died. easy enough fix, but I really can't believe that they went through with such a poor design. At a minimum, this drive should be able to be replaced without voiding the warranty. Wouldn't have taken much to have a drive hiding behind a little hatch/cover.

  5. I replaced the USB. I can SSH into the device now but when I go to the web landing page it says "UniFi Protect Network Video Recorder Booting" "This seems to be taking longer than usual" — It has been stuck at this screen for about 30 minutes. Do I just continue to wait?

  6. Have just had same issue with my second UNVR after fixing my first one 6months ago (100% failure rate for me!). Easy enough fix..this time it frooze on the reboot also: powered off, pulled the drive sleds out, powered back on, reinserted drives, and it booted & brought me to the set-up page easy enough, cameras & footage still set-up. Restore from back-up wass straightforward. Frustating to have to do this though – & i expect the replaced USBs will need replacing again in a year or so…

  7. Absolutely brilliant! I thought I had to buy a new UNVR as it did what your video is showing right after the 2 year mark! I have been so upset about it and furious with Ubiquiti! Got to attempt this fix! Cody from Mactelecom sent me this way so i am glad we have you guys online!

  8. In the united states those "warranty invalid if seal broken" stickers are actually illegal, they have to prove that your modification is what damaged the device

  9. Starting to look at the Unifi protect myself now, currently got two Ring cameras, door and floodlight. I was looking to add another camera and thought is it time to transition to Unifi Protect. I believe my CK2 Plus unit would suffice for now. I like the Ring floodlight cam due to the lights, but of course that can change. I however don't have networking wiring to the garage.

  10. You don't need to factory reset it or lose any configuration – just turn it on the first time (after inserting the new USB stick) with the HDDs *OUT*. Full steps are on the Ubiquiti forum topic thread for this issue. Once the system has reinitialised the new USB memory stick you can reinsert the HDDs and all your recordings will be available.
