  1. the 2.5d games you showed, don't really know if I could handle those, as their camera looks very nauseating, for example I can't do Sonic games at all, the camera is just moving far too quickly causing some sort of sickness.

  2. With regards to games that I think definitely flew under the radar (at least in the GBA era), I can name a few.

The first would be Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart, or DWM 3. It's a Japanese-only release, but it received a full English fan translation. The nature of how monsters are "collected" is unorthodox, to say the least, but it's worth investing some time into once you get the hang of the mechanics.

A second one is a very Obscure title with a poor English Translation known as Dokapon. It was my first Roguelike. The Player is an Adventurer, but there are some Monster Taming elements to it. It's just that if the Player loses a battle, they lose all of their equipment, as well as the monster that is with them. Not something I would revisit without save states.

The third, while not Monster Taming per se, but has elements of it, is Medabots 2 Core (not the AX version). This game is a remake of the main Medabots series 2nd game, which is more Turn-based. You're still collecting machine parts of other robots and you're able to mix and match them to your heart's content. Sadly, none of the other games made it stateside. As an aside, this is one I'd like to see you do a playthrough of someday.

Number 4, which is in the vein of Robot collection as well, is Robopon 2. It made some adjustments from the original to make it stand apart more from Pokémon in that you "spark" robots from batteries instead of capturing wild robots, but the story is meh at best. You'd have to push yourself to finish it. There's also no Postgame in that title, so that's a big no-no in my book. Still worth checking out since it's relatively short.

The last series, and my favorite, is Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children, localized as Demikids. It's basically a more kid-friendly version (if you can call it that) of SMT. The Player themselves doesn't fight alongside their monsters (called demons here), and the monsters do not level up at all during Battle. You basically have to negotiate with enemies during combat to recruit higher level ones, as well as perform enhancements and fusions to get stronger ones, much like SMT V. Like Medabots and Robopon, they are sold in separate versions. However, in Demikids' case, what differentiates the versions are the Protagonists of the game. They both have different storylines, so you'd have to play both to get a complete scope of what the story entails. The only ones localized were Light and Dark. The sequels never came over, unfortunately. Definitely would love to see a playthrough of one of these from you as well.

All of these games are on the Gameboy Advance. This could be its own video, but it's been too long since I've played any of these. I'm sure I left out some details. I don't expect some of these franchises to be revisited, either. Thank you for what you do, Ed.

  3. Roguelikes are all about perma-death, and sometimes permanent progress loss overall, its very concept goes against the idea of collecting monsters since you will just lose everything with a single death anyways and maybe one of the reasons why its not popular, people get scared very easily when hearing the word "roguelike" after all and its a super niche game genre because of that

Now, I said rogueLIKE, as in, the term created to describe games based on Rogue, the first game of this kind.

There is also Rogue-lite, LITE, and this monster taming game probably is of the Lite category, which grabs the Rogue formula and changes a few things for a more casual audience, for the sake of comparison
A -Like game would be NetHack
While a -lite would be Pokemon Mistery Dungeon

  4. Sorry but I really don't like the styles 3:36
1:41 and Monster Crown sadly dissapointed me. I need to be careful that I'm just not impatiend overwhelmed or whatever by some of these games or the time they take, TemTem and Monster Crown dissapointed me for different reasons. With Coromon I never liked the "pineapple" head and just trusted myself with getting bored during the demo.

Pixels Digital Creatures,…I felt like I like 50% of the monsters, but from what I heard some might be held back by the half bald, mustace wearing, old dude. I'm starting to get into Roguelikes a bit or Roguelite I don't know yet.

It's always a bit weird for me to see someone practically loving everything and then I see a lot of styles that I think are just okay or reduce the price for me. Then again at least you make a difference there for what you really like.

There is still the chance that i hated the idea to having to replay it later, still that might be a bad sign.
I have Essentures on my list and want to gather more info about that.

I guess I had to many wrong choices recently that the fact Nexomon started or is a handy game turned me away. (including being to easy if i heard that right).

DISCCREATURES WORLD : This might be the first of Disccreature that i want, back then the short? story and no evolution thing was enough to turn me a way but I would call myself picky there.

6:00 Unsure on the designs but something appears interessting there. One of these bird things look a bit like a Miechief Makers Villain

    Necromancers gift maybe?
Thanks to your videos I'm already keeping an eye on Necromancers gift, Gorit for now, Palworld, Pry into the Void, Casette Beasts, Snode Heart, Mirrored Soul, Kindred Fates (I have to see how good it is and what my PC will say about it).
New Town needs Tamer (Never heard anything from it again) and Essentures.

  5. Personally I am sick tired of turn based trash. I get that snes and such could not do much else. Then we got Digimon World in ps1, that kind of real time fight felt 9k times better. Currently waiting on Next Order release on steam.

  6. Monster Crown's lack of attention is due to the fact it was basically unplayable for nearly a year after it's release due to game-breaking bugs. The real game-breakers got patched recently, but the game is still buggier than 1st gen pokemon, which is saying something. God help those bastards who own a switch copy and have to wait for Nintendo to approve fixes.

  7. ….yah can we get ed after dark or something? So many of monster taming games are nsfw and not suited for his channel. Not one word on mgq paradox part 3. No friendship with benefits or monster girl 1000. No mention of the new touhou rpg. No coverage of shrift 2.

    Then mobile….

  8. Disc Creatures was a lot more fun than I expected so I'm really looking forward to Disc Creatures World. Nanokin looks really cool. I'm always down for grid-based games. I loved Pokemon Conquest and if they gave me a straight up Fire Emblem x Pokemon I'd be in heaven. Abomi Nation was a great game that deserves more attention. Something I think some games struggle with is the lack of a true evolution feature. It's fine for games to have their own twist on the formula but when evolutions are lacking I think that games really struggle unless they have a really balanced system like Monster Sanctuary. Monster Crown was an amazing concept that unfortunately missed the mark for me due to very poor balancing of the creatures and having a sort of identity crisis unnecessarily following a sort of Pokemon formula when it could have just been its own thing and a fully more mature experience. The writing just wasn't there.

  9. Some genres blend well with rouge-likes/lites, such as card game mechanics like slay the spire. I think monster taming would be much more difficult to blend into a rouge-like/lite formula; but honestly I wouldn’t write them off without giving them a try at the very least

  10. I streamed Mython Island a couple months back, loved playing through it, the graphic style took some time to grow on me though. I'm currently playing through PIXELS and I'm having a blast with it also. I would definitely recommend trying out both!

  11. I urge everyone here to checkout Abomi Nation! It is amazing! While it lacks in plot and depth of story progression; The art style is amazing, gameplay is so fun, the Nuzlock format is interesting and totally adds to the replayability! A If plus is that it is coming to Nintendo Switch and other major gaming systems soon!! 10/10

  12. More of a monster raising game, but Kerberos Studios Kaiju-A-Gogo was criminally under rated. Only 3 monsters, but you basically raise them up through a open world map campaign of smashing cities, level them up, build up your mad scientist lab, etc.

  13. Awesome😊 i tried something different, i bought Patch Quest and…oh my.. that game is soooo good. There'so much more than it is advertised. Map is huge (many biomes that "blend" together in different ways), ton of creatures to mount (and actually tame and ranch), there is a lot of stuff and modes that you unlock after a couple of runs. Very very neat game with a lot of attention to details…Just to say, every creature you mount has a different soundtrack. Love this game…you should give It a try, it's real fun😊it really deserves a proper showcase imho, i mean, i know it's different from our "ordinary" Monster tamer genre, but It fits…in a similar way like Monster sanctuary did. Thank you so much for making me discover It😊
