Ukrainian official: Counteroffensive not a 'single event' | DW News

Breaking news in Ukraine: At least one person has been killed and more than a dozen others wounded after Russian missiles struck a hospital in the central city of Dnipro. Local media showed buildings ablaze as staff struggled to evacuate patients. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has denounced the strike as a crime against humanity. Ukrainian officials say it came amid a large-scale rocket and drone attack on the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Our Correspondent Mathias Bölinger is in Kyiv and tells us more about the attack.

Meanwhile, Russia and Ukraine have carried out a prisoner swap near the contested city of Bakhmut. A hundred and six Ukrainian soldiers were returned in the exchange – and Wagner’s commander appeared to be welcoming returned Russian soldiers too. The mercenary Russian unit said it was now withdrawing from the flashpoint city and handing over full control to the Russian military. But Kyiv still insists that Bakhmut hasn’t fallen.

Also, a senior Ukrainian official said yesterday that the long awaited counteoffensive is already underway but that it should not be anticipated as one ‘single event’.

For more on this we talk to military analyst and defense expert Marina Miron from King’s College London.

  1. This channel amazes me daily, like if you want Ukraine to fail just be honest about it. You systematically use diminishing language towards Ukraine & Ukrainians. Why are you even covering this? Like what are your values (if any 😂)?

  2. The situation in Donbass is steadily worsening. Putin is deploying a significant portion of his military forces to the region. The tactics employed by the Kremlin resemble those of terrorists. Both the Russian army and the Wagner PMC are facing difficulties in maintaining their supplies. The true strength of the Russian army may not be as formidable as it appears.

  3. They were saying it for months now, western media is overhyping the whole counteroffensive thing. It will happen, it will happen soon, but it's not just one big army of Ukrainians running through the occupied territories and deoccupying them. We should be patient, it's not a game, these maneuvers require a thorough planning. And with our military aid I'm sure Ukrainian army will win.

  4. The Ukrainian offensive will happen when everything is prepared, it is a serious operation, so every detail in it is important. Despite this, the Russian army will still begin to leave its positions under pressure from the Ukrainian army, just as it was during the last offensive on Ukraine

  5. The evident weakening of Russia reveals its true capabilities, which fall short of its grandiose image. With adequate armament, Ukraine can mount a successful defense and cause significant harm to its enemy, leaving no uncertainty about the eventual liberation of all its territories
