UK economy: slump in pound piles pressure on Labour

The cost of government borrowing rose again this morning and the pound fell – with financial markets still worried by the country’s faltering economy and weak public finances.

The Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Darren Jones, tried to calm nerves, saying the government was determined to keep the national debt under control.

The Chancellor herself is on a flight to China, in search of new trade and investment opportunities to kick start the economy.

  2. More millionaires have left the UK than any other country that China.

That is an indictment of the failures of our MP's to manage competently.

The public sector is 10-15% below pre covid productivity levels. When the land registry staff were asked to work in the office 3 days a week instead of 2 , the union representative had the audacity and arrogance to say … this is not victorian Britain, as if being asked to work at your place of work was akin to working in mines or factories for double the number of hours , 6 days a week without pension, healthcare, social security etc.

The civil service is dominated by middle class London and home counties suburbanites ie the woke left. They undermined the tory government and will do the same to Labour if it threatens their interests.

The country needs to cut social welfare, over 10 million working age people is not acceptable, we need to drive productivity in the public sector by AI/ IT means if necessary, we need to cut waste, cut the cost of government, make it easier to hire and fire non-performing staff. We need to incentivise technological investment both from UK and overseas companies and we need to strive to build relationships with nations around the world.

There is so much wrong with the country only radical thinking can change the tide.

  3. 4:12, why he keeps use the term β€˜us bending our knees to China’? I thought UK is on his knees because UK’s economy is crumbling.

Plus, the real question, as an equal business partner to China, what can UK put on the table? If UK has nothing but to lecture how China should rule in Hong Kong, well, are you sure you not having a nostalgic moment for a powerful empire?

  4. "Remember remember the fifth of November" This should be are next public holiday or the closest Monday. "Political accountability day" Well he managed to keep them honest for awhile. They seem to think we are celebrating the fact he was caught. lol This should be a day of reflection on what the government have said the previous year and what they actually did. They need to be held accountable. On this day the country should by law be able to fire by the worst politician of the year, as voted for by the country.

  5. All the sputter about 'bending the knee' to China…Trump also expects the same of us to the USA. UK is no longer a relevant superpower. Unless things turn for the better, the UK will need to bend the knee to anyone to get us out of this mess.

  7. The UK is finished. We have no one in power who has a brain cell to fix the UK economy. I dread to think what this shambolic government will do to this country by the time REFORM take office.

  9. NHS hospitals in crisis, as 1,000s of pensioners are not turning on thier heating in this cold snap .
Reeves budget backfires as pensioners are filling NHS beds , flu and covid is rife in our hospitals, and pensioners are struggling to survive this cold winter and high energy prices.
IF YOU VOTED LABOUR THEY BETRAYED OUR ELDERLY.
