Turtle traffic jam leads to crash on Florida highway

A motorist’s decision to stop on a highway in the Florida Panhandle to allow a turtle to cross the road led to a chain-reaction crash involving multiple vehicles, including a semi-truck, on Tuesday morning, May 16, Walton County officials said. This dashcam footage, obtained from a truck involved in the crash, shows several vehicles stopped on southbound lanes of US-331 near Defuniak Springs. The truck driver fails to brake in time and collides with at least two vehicles from behind, the video shows. The footage was released by the Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) along with a message urging motorists to avoid causing “a road obstruction because of a reptilian obstruction.” Credit: Walton County Sheriff via Storyful

  1. That 'Big Rig' driver is simply appalling … It is OBVIOUS that something is froming ahead and so you SLOW DOWN … I would have been slowing down in the big truck 5 seconds before this video even starts!

Yes, I have driven such vehilces, I have trained people to drive such vehicles and I am an advanced driver plus instructor. These big trucks do not brake and stop like a car or pick up .. The sheer weight empty of c.25 + tonnes takes some distance to stop, let alone loaded. You MUST read the road ahead far better than any car driver. Indeed the drivers of large vehilces and motorcycle riders should have the very best observation of all road users.

Either the big rig driver was looking at their phone, watching a film or maybe they had just 'switched off' their brain …. Whatever thr reason, that is driving that which should lead to them recieving a significant driving ban.

Yes, people do stupid things in cars all the time … However when driving around in 25- 44+ tonne vehicles, then YOU as the large vehicle driver have to be fully aware, always be able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear and very much, avoid squashing people!!

  2. The idiot in a semi did not even start slowing down before it was too late! He has the best forward visibility because of his sitting position, and he was able to see the stopped cars long before he needed to emergency brake!
