Turning human waste into renewable energy explained. Literally. I’m talking about … well, poop. There’s a rich, carbon-neutral resource that we could tap into: Turning human waste into energy instead of flushing it down the toilet. It could be used as a coal alternative, carbon sequestration, strengthening concrete and more. There’s an old technology, hydrothermal carbonization, that’s starting to make a splash and might change the way you think about number 2. Let’s see if we can come to a decision on turning waste into energy and if it’s worth it.

This motivates me to give a shit
LA DWP has been running generators on fumes from the sewer waste gas for years! I remember reading about it back in the early 90's!
We should generate biogas from our shit to cut on greenhouse gases, but there is no money in it so no funds. Over 80% of household waste is water . You need a lot of energy to remove solids from waste water. Most places operate on overcharging households for waste which is now priced more than 75% of drinking water charges and also being supported by massive government grants to brake it even. Many places in the EU who were producing biogas from human waste are cut from government money for the past 20-30years hence all our shit and food is just rotting on the landfill.
Gives whole new meaning when u say this house is a" piece of sh.t"
Sure gives a new post-pandemic spin to the term "human resources".
Heck yeah. In the most fantastic factory game: Captain of Industry, I turn waste water into sludge and sour water in the water treatment plant; sludge into compost and fuel gas in the anaerobic digester. That fuel gas is then used to power the boilers that spin the turbines that create electricity. What fun!
Are humans causing climate change? Yes, say 97% of scientists; no, say most millionaires and billionaires. Moreover, to wean the free world from its dependence on Russian oil, coal, and gas, we need these kinds of energy: solar, photovoltaic, wind, wave, hydro, geothermal, tidal, biomass, hydrothermal carbonization (HTC), and hydrogen–fuel cells tech. But for the next 1000 years we also need nuclear fusion. Someday, however, we will need to get energy from tiny black holes. 💕☮🌎🌌
So with this technology could you break down plastic so get rid of another pollutant
It's USA that's 50 years behind in everything
"construction industry produces 40% of the worlds CO2 emissions" that doesn't sound right. Home heating and personal transportation are the #1 and #2 sources of GHGs, at least in USA. I worked on a PV sewage treatment greenhouse on an organic farm, 40 years ago, and I don't see the upside to boiling sewage, considering nature has purified water for billions of years. But this is the first I have heard of such tech.
Fantastic Stuffz – Are these guys hiring???

This is charlatinist gimme a grant bullshit. I worked on a project where we put a dome over a sewage treatment plant's aeration pond to collect methane from the decomposing waste. The landfills have vents venting off methane & CO2 or some of them have flares that burn off the methane & CO2. Some of those mixtures are super clean burning. The HTC coal can make diesel or it can even be further refined into a crude gasoline, light aromatic solvents & gases. This is just refining processed poop. Every refinery has pressure vessels but refined poop is not energy dense like coal or crude oil is. You can carbonize anything that has carbon in it. Anyone who has ever made charcoal or char cloth knows how this works.
Hi Matt how did you get the 5 to 15 tonnes of solid waste? You said 1 pound per person per day. Was the 5 to 15 tons per person per year? I was struggling to see the link, does the 5 to 15 include weight of water in the flush?
Why are we not doing this on bigger scale ? Sounds like a win win situation ! Thanks for sharing great info! #2=#1
Number one 🙂
If a anything can be carbonized, how about garbage?
Great video! Keep the video coming! Thanks
I live outside the city. One time every secound year a big truck comes and eamty mu septic tank / 22 000l tank.
Can I make a HTC system at home 😀 ?
