Lawmakers in Turks and Caicos have amended their firearms law, removing the mandatory 12-year prison sentence that a handful of American tourists faced after allegedly bringing ammunition to the country by mistake. The change comes ahead of Oklahoma man Ryan Watson’s sentencing under the law. CBS News national correspondent Manuel Bojorquez has more.

How hard is it to clean your bags out before you go on vacation I can't believe this is happening to so many people one here there I can see but all these people what the hell are these people want to allow this to happen they just have bullets in the bottom of their bags back at home something doesn't seem right when so many people are doing this empty your bags out people clean them be aware of everything on and around you
NEVER use your regular travel luggage for going to the range or on hunting trips. Period. Get bags dedicated to that purpose and don't use them for anything else. 🙄
It was a draconian law in terms of punishments, so they changed it. I am only surprised that they passed it in the first place.
AAAA HAHAHAHAHAHAHA not a smart thing they did there. hope they have to pay a fine so huge they can't vacation for 10 years.
People stopped going and canceling their plans they'll change their ways real quick….. absolutely amazing that people will pay their money to be treated like they live in a third world country.
@3:00 they only change the law cuz they had a drastic reduction in tourists hurting their bottom line. They will never have to worry about me having ammunition in my bag there cuz me or my bags will never go there.
Why don't they focus on real criminals….these people don't seam like a danger to society.
Most American story ever. Traveling with loose ammo in their baggage to foreign countries. Probably have loose ammo in the glove box, under the bed, in the refrigerator, rolling around in the kids toy box.
You pack your travel bags, you are responsible for there content and you are the only one who should be punished
My jiffy cornbread mix was damn near confiscated but Ammon got through
Maybe empty out your travel bags BEFORE you pack for a trip? Duh.
More proof TSA is just as effective as anything else staffed with Merikan people.
America threatened them is how that happened.
Wow, Americans strong arming other countries into changing their laws over their citizens breaking international laws. You have truly exported your gun culture everywhere.
How do you accidentally have ammunition in your luggage is beyond me.
He's still owns a gun. He still going to be suspect of shooting somebody and ending up in jail… That's the wonderful world of gun ownership. His risk has not ended.
It was probably accidental. Thank goodness. 🙏prayers To there family.
The law is NOT retroactive. If he committed the crime before the law changed – he STILL broke the law.
Want tourism ?
When people boycott the Islands this will change the laws because of the money grab of bad news .
How did they get out of the country with ammo? Thru a US airport with ammo how does that happen? How did they forget ammo in travel bags???
How arrogant does one have to be to "assume" that what is acceptable or not a big deal in their country of origin is going to be acceptable in a different sovereign country, especially when it comes to firearms…
it becomes even more absurd when you find out how much crime is actually taking place on the islands and that includes crimes committed with firearms and other weapons. The authorities on the islands know who to squeeze for money. It would take effort to combat their local crime problems and cost them money to incarcerate but a tourist shows up, they know they can ransom or bargain a nothing issue for big money.
Million dollar scheme by Turks and Caicos to get as much money out of foreigners they can. Because they can't manage money right on the island.
Common Sense people leave your guns and ammo home when visiting another Country, how hard could it be to not understand that. Learn the countries laws before. Jeez
Some places consider it Trafficking Weapons.
The amount of boot lickers on here. It's nice how politicians and corrupt police get away with Much worse and serve No jail time.
Congressman Bob Good went down there in person with a few other congressmen and made it clear they would make things very difficult for the little country if they jailed these citizens over b.s. charges. The island has armed gangs running around. An American with a few stray rounds in the fold of a duffle bag is not the problem. People from free states know, ammo laying around is nothing outbof the ordinary. There are rounds in car cup holders, trunk carpets, duffle bags, everywhere if you do any real training.
This news anchor 😍
Sida bar.. the man with the picture blacked outbis an agent
If TSA checked travelers’ carryons the way they check black women’s braids they would have found the ammunition.
"Accidentally leave ammo in a bag".
This is only an issue for Americans and terrorists.😮
I wonder if the US will change their drug laws for people who accidentally bring drugs into the country?
I used to go on a lot of scuba diving vacations. Since the birth of my daughter I haven’t been but she’s almost old enough to get certified. This nonsense will keep me from going to T&C.
The sole purpose of the word "accident" is to remove responsibility. I can see how throwing certain words around the correct way immediately make you a victim in need of forgiveness and compassion. "Let's change our laws to allow rich arrogance to dominate our tourism industry"….
What a joke. Funny how people magically forget that when applying the law you can take into account rational context. Obviously there was no criminal intent at all which is an extremely common thing to take into context when a prosecutor files charges on you. A cash fine is clearly sufficient in this case. Anybody says otherwise is an idiot.
Prolly have better luck getting help from the state department if they were basketball playing lesbians that actually get popped with drugs in foreign countries
Turks and Caicos is a British territory.
HERE'S WHAT THEY REFUSE TO REPORT. The airport personnel planted it on them. Look up "bala bala scam". There was a doctor in 2014 who was an anti-gun liberal who this happened to. He never owned a gun in his life!!! Senators got wind of this and they came in and threw all the proof of that on the desk of the ambassador and said "This zhit stops NOW". Of course the MSM won't report on this
Only if the media was as proactive to have the gun laws relaxed in our own States.
Here's an idea, stop traveling to T&C if so unwavering.
How did all these people get through TSA with the ammo the first place?
It's sickening to bend to Americans this way. Americans need to learn to carry less ammo. Sympathy = zero
Ammunition not firearms. SMH
