Tunnel Vision: Recapping the Trojans tough 43-42 loss to the Utes in Salt Lake City

Sunday night Tunnel Vision is back with USCFootball.com’s Ryan Abraham and Chris Trevino along with intern Jack Smith breaking down the Trojans heartbreaking 43-42 loss to the Utes. The USC offense came out of the gate with a bang, scoring touchdowns on its first three drives despite dealing with the intense crowd noise at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The defense was a different story, failing to get stops and having no answers for quarterback Cameron Rising and tight end Dalton Kincaid. The guys talk about what went right and what went wrong in Salt Lake City, how the Pac-12 officiating impacted the game and if head coach Lincoln Riley could have done anything differently down the stretch.
Quarterback Caleb Williams had an All-American like performance, completing 25 of 42 passes for 381 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 97 positive yards including a 55-yard scamper in the first quarter, but his total rushing yards was 57 because of 40 yards lost in sacks. Jordan Addison and Mario Williams led the way for the receivers, combining for 11 catches for 251 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Eric Gentry was USC’s leading tackler with 9 stops and one forced fumble.

  1. I 100% agree the season i'snt over. This was a tough loss but everyone complaining about the D has very valid points. The defense has to get better and I believe it will, maybe not this season but it will get there.

  2. Riley prepared our team mentally for the hostile environment and physically for weaknesses and strengths of Utah as well. Results were a One Point loss with help from refs. We learned from UCLA vs Utes, you need a big lead, because Utes come back. This game proves Riley is a great coach, Caleb has Heisman potential and the team has a great future. We knew Defense going in needed to demonstrate consistency. In the past, they have made adjustments, but found difficulty this game because of refs. Should have won. USC might have been outcoached. Still 6 and 1 while Utah 5 and 2. UCLA will be under pressure in an away game too. PAC 12 finishes are far from over. Proud of the Trojans!

  3. Glad you mentioned Brandt Keithe, he along with Kincaid were one of the best TE duos in the country before Keithe’s injury two weeks ago. Kincaid is amazing and has been doing this the past two years, but your correct, Keithe is actually an even better TE.

  4. The refs literally Dictated the momentum changes in this game and thus the outcome. You guys can blame the Defense all you want but everytime they got a Stop the refs bailed Utah out. Also, why don't you guys talk about the offense NOT doing shit with the fumble the defense recovered? 🤔

  5. Utah should have a touchdown taken away. USC intercepted the ball but a corrupt ref said USC had a roughing the passer penalty. There was no roughing the passer. And of course Utah ended up scoring seven points. Take those away. USC won the game. USC can't leave the PAC-1 soon enough.

  6. Season isn't over, only now OTHER TEAMS control our destiny. Very spotty O-line play, HUGE hole over the middle on D, ignored the tight end and he goes for 250, HORRIFIC refereeing, dropped passes, very little pressure on Rising. I called this one in August. Now, Arizona's de Laura is similar: 325 a game, 19 TDs but 7 INTs. Arizona is now a trap game. Should beat Colorado and Cal; get by U of A and we roll into ucla 9-1. But we will almost certainly lose those last 2 games. 9-3, MAYBE 10-2.

  7. Utah was favored to win. USC led almost the entire game and lost by 1w/49 seconds. Lol. I was shocked we led till the end, then shocked we lost in the end. No excuses. (ref and noise …big deal its football) Great game.
Lots more wins in the coming months and years. USC is definitely on the Natty trajectory. Fight On!

I think Utah is still a strong team, good program and should do well. Congrats to the Utes.

  8. Jesus Christ, it's embarrassing to watch grown men crying about a game and refs…

Life isn't fair, USC fans and alumni are on a crybaby festival and can't lose with dignity and respect for the game,

Shesh we have a whole bye week to listen to this crap.

If it comes down to refs then you shouldn't have left the opportunity for the other team…

Fact of the matter is that was yesterday, so, 🤷 Dafuq, pick up move on it's next team.

  9. Love the show, ✌️. Im proud of this team, they fought hard until the end…big turn around from what we have been accustomed to seeing past few years. Learn and grow from this, recover on the bye week and come out strong against Arizona.

  10. First Tunnel Vision I've missed this year because of that PAC-12 Ref job of a game. Two bogus roughing the passer calls that should not have been called and resulted in 14 points for the Utes.

  11. Dam people. We lost on their turf by one point. National tv, night game, one of the toughest places to play probably 2nd toughest after Autzen, we were the underdog and not the favorite for several reasons and yet we only loss by one point. We also lost several starters like Addison and Gentry. Notice I didn't even have to mention the Refs. ONE POINT

  12. i just dont understand why we didnt run the ball with a 14-0 lead. Slow the game down, give your defense a break, and cater to the one thing our O-line does well which is run block cuz we CLEARLY cant pass block and it pisses me off casual fans blame Caleb’s play against Ore St and Wash St.
He has he to run around like a chicken with its head cut off THE WHOLE FREAKIN YR.

Literally every other play, Caleb has to scramble around the collapsed pocket and this was happening in the games with weak talentless defensive fronts like Rice, Stanford and Fresno St.
Fire Henson and get a real O-line coach ffs !!

  13. I think the other Pac 12 Teams respect USC more after this game – even though they lost…everyone saw this team dominate Utah at Utah for a lot of the game…not even putting the officiating in the mix – get healthy, and USC has a great chance to win out.

  14. Utah’s AD is a marketing genius. He knew his team could not beat us straight up. So they chose to honor their fallen teammates, wear special uniforms and helmets, and fill the stadium to capacity just to beat USC. They could have done all this in beginning of the season. Great strategy and it worked. Enjoy your Holiday Bowl!
