It really is Absent Without Leave. Really it is. Besides that being factual, it makes no sense that such a term would make such a distinction when the military would never see need to identify leave as official. There can't be unofficial permission, eh?
Although jardinière would indeed translate as (female) gardener, the word in English is usually applied to one of those tall ornamental stands for a potted house-plant, usually ceramic. Really out of fashion now.

I noticed lots of repetitions in this one! mostly from in the theme (baba, muumuu, naenae) but also outside of it (USA USA, Noel Noel) and even a little bit in the clues (46 down Win-win)

I'm from Chicago and I didn't know Harold's either. I thought IERE was a bit obscure for me, but all the crosses were easy enough.
The Hawaiian pronunciation of muumuu is not moomoo. There is a pause between each vowel and each u is pronounced. In Hawaiian, it's mu'umu'u.
