I bought a dollar store set and did some pretty good florals, so I got an expensive set and couldn't seem to improve. They have gathered dust for a few years but now I'm ready to try again with the help of YouTube!
Firstly you use pastel Paper for it, they come in like multiple sheets like stuck together. Secondly never sketch it out with a pencil first otherwise… that will happen, if you sketch very very lightly with a pencil it will not affect it though the key is is to gently outline with a base color and go from there layering and blending, I use my finger to blend it, but if you want to not get your hands dirty you can find something else for that. Quality pastels do not have as much of a crayon texture though they are very waxy, I suggest the brand portfolio. It makes me sad to hear them as crayons for adults because I really like oil pastels, but I guess that is what they are😅
@ssavaart i tried to do a Mortal Kombat 95 movie like poster on watercolor paper and used oil pastels. Big mistake but may take on colored pencils instead and hopefully paint. I love watching your videos I kept experimenting layering colors (mostly with oil Pastels) your videos are awesome.
But what about hard pastels?

Oil pastels go nice with watercolor because the oil repels the water maybe try that 😊

As a person that use mainly oil pastels for my art I always draw something once or twice before being satisfied 😊
Why are they? 30-year-old maybe therefore adults

That's why I only use markers and colored pencils
Even after 30 years you dont know how to use them
1 year later and I’m very happy with my pastel art.
