  1. I rewatched the whole first season again because of this reaction series! Truly some incredible character development: Marty INSISTS he's a steady, devoted family man, Rust INSISTS he's a nihilist who rejects humanity and community. With every action you see how they reveal their true selves.

  2. I'm the only person who thinks S02 is better. This first season is all about the screenwriter, Nic Pizzolatto. HBO loved his work so much that they rushed him into making the second season. Instead of it being grey and isolated, it's loud and colorful, and it has a fairly big ensemble cast, and every character is on a death spiral, in a town that's on a death spiral. It's amazing. There's this one breathtaking twenty-minute scene that everyone criticized simply because Rachel McAdams was holding her prop gun at the wrong angle. But every character has this really interesting arc that also happens to be painful and almost unwatchable. ๐Ÿ™‚ And then it just… oh… this idea of an old, old soul who's had this eternal conflict between his passions and his desire to do the right thing, facing up to his choices amidst the redwoods — massive souls themselves, and yet he's lost in insignificance at their feet. It's beautiful.

  3. I like the dialogue of True Detective, even if I find the plot so very depressing.

Your watching this series makes me want to suggest Deadwood as another series you might find interesting. It was a series put out by HBO from 2004 to 2006, and is a period piece about a frontier town in 1876. It has an astonishing amount of swearing and is filled with terribly brutal violence at times, but the dialogue is truly exceptional, it's actually poetic even when mixed with an absolute torrent of cursing.

Another series, this one set in modern California and tracking a team of detectives solving crimes, is The Mentalist. This series has an exceptional central character named Patrick Jane that I think you would enjoy a great deal. His character is a personable genius, but was a con man in his prior life, before a great tragedy causes him to join this team of detectives.

  4. Great channel. I think a good movie for you and your sister to watch would be The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo. It has action and romance in equal measure. Shakespeare In Love is another movie I think you will love. The movie has a solid script and clever dialog. It's a lot of fun. Just a couple of suggestions.

  5. The pay off in totality from True Detective season 1 is why I consider it to be better than early Game of Thrones, breaking bad, and Sopranos. All those are much longer tv series, but TD season 1 packs a ton of excellent content in 8 episodes. My experience watching is similar to Cassieโ€™s bc the show subject matter requires the viewer to immerse themselves in the most uncomfortable and vile places. I was a fan of Woody and McConaughey before but they brought their A+ game and everything felt more raw and can make ya have to keep reminding yourself itโ€™s a show. Scary part though is the details of this case may not be based 100% in reality but crimes just like this have been perpetrated by evil evil predators that were every bit as morally reprehensible as the human mind can conjure up. One can only Hope those evildoers suffer for their deeds and justice is delivered for the victims and their families.

  7. Donโ€™t get me wrong I love PIB and adore True Detective but this is uncomfortable to watch. Cassie is barely into it, which is totally fine. But sometimes itโ€™s like watching someone get tortured and thatโ€™s not nice. I hope she isnโ€™t continuing because she has to for the channel.

  8. No… cass… , ep3 – "mowing the lawn" is kind of a euphemism for fulfilling the husbands responsibilities/duties around a household… aka, sex lol So when Woody Harrelson's character says "i don't want you mowing my lawn, i LIKE mowing my lawn" he's actually talking about his relationship with his wife, which Mcconaughey's character has constantly been making snide remarks about because Harrelson's character is having an affair, but the scene is making it very clear that Harrelson's character is extremely protective of his family and his marriage, despite his flaws and faults.
Likewise when you see McConaughey's character give him that nod – it's like a "shit, im sorry – i overstepped" – yes, men are weird lol, we know it – you can ask us for 2weeks straight to cut the lawn and we wont do it, but if you ask or god forbid PAY someone else to do it, we will be pissed lol.

  9. Harrison Ford's Witness is definitely not a rom-com BUT it is a massively underrated romantic thriller with great performances from Ford and also Kelly McGillis (Top Gun) and I really think given her crush on Ford, Cassie would enjoy it from that angle alone

  10. I'm glad to see this series getting some love again. I wasn't sure if it was a "in the moment" type viewing or if it would get rediscovered every few years or so. I've also been pondering about the question of what to watch next after this season and I'd live to suggest another short lived show that I think would be perfect for Popcorn In Bed. I was hoping to suggest it if Blue Velvet would ever happen to get a reaction here, but I guess this might be the best way. Here it is…. Twin Peaks. Now the original series only got 2 seasons and a movie until 2017 when showtime did the 18 episode limited series event. However it really became a phenomena for the early 90's. It had everyone trying to solve the mystery. I didn't get around to watching the series until about 10 years ago and I wished I had see it sooner.
