Trudeau says housing in Canada must "retain its value"

Did Prime Minister Justin Trudeau say the quiet part out loud in an interview with the Globe and Mail?

“Housing needs to retain its value,” Trudeau told The Globe and Mail’s City Space podcast last week. “It’s a huge part of people’s potential for retirement and future nest egg.”

As Mackenzie Gray explains, while those comments sound great for homeowners, it will likely keep prospective first-time homebuyers frustrated – the demographic Trudeau is desperate to win over.

  1. Trudeau is so adamant about bankrupting Canadian Born Citizens, and making sure they are homeless so his Non-Canadian invaders get housed over actual citizens!! Trudeau must be stopped in order to save Canada!

    SAVE CANADA!
    STOP TRUDEAU!!
    END CENSORSHIP!!!
    CANADIANS FIRST!!!!

  2. What a disgrace!
He is really showing that he doesn't care about Canadians who can't get any affordable housing because of his horrible policies, and now he is here explicitly saying it loud that he doesn't care! What a hypocrite!!
Of course, he had never to buy a house with his money. He lives in a house funded by taxpayers! He also has a mansion from his father as inheritance, which is also paid by taxpayers. This guy is out of touch and a disgrace to this country!

  3. Pretty bad new segment given how out of context the reporter took the PMs words to score 'controversy' points. News outlets need to focus less on creating drama (but that would diminish ad revenue returns) and return to just the facts without hyperbole.

  4. Not true, this news guy doesn't get it; he uses prices in Vancouver and Toronto and assumes that it is that way all over Canada, it isn't. Prices will never come down, that's just a fact of life; they may dip a little here or there, but they will never come down to the point of being "affordable". That is why we don't want house prices to go down. What we want is to be able to afford houses, and the way to do that is to increase WAGES. Also, with remote working the big cities of Toronto and Vancouver are no longer a good place for working; they are a great place to visit in order to enjoy tourism and culture, and art, and fine dining, but not to work or to live inside of; which is why small cities and towns are going to make a comeback. They're affordable right now, and they make for a better place to live and work. BUT, we still need higher wages to afford these locations and to be able to enjoy life. What we need is for min. wage to go up to $35 an hour so that GenZ and Millennials can afford to live.

  5. Trudeau borrowed $50 BILLION from the Bank of Canada to buy up all the Canadian housing bonds, meaning the government will now own the majority of Canada's homes. Clearly he now wants the housing market to retain its value so his government can make a huge profit from all those bonds he's bought. Because the government now owns the monopoly on houses in Canada, the government alone dictates AFFORDABILITY. That said, what exactly does Trudeau think is affordable when he's already taxing Canadians to an early death?

  6. Trudeau let in over 200k working age immigrants in the first 4 mos of 2023 , which set a record. He just let in 405k in the first 4 mos of 2024! That an annual pace of 1.2M people in 1 year!
We had a housing crisis already. Those people will compete for a place to live. Crazy 🤪
