In 2012, China introduced a law to curb the widespread abuse of psychiatric hospitals by the authorities, but it hasn’t worked.
This in-depth investigation reveals how the police found ways to circumvent the law, allowing them to punish protestors without going through the criminal justice system. With almost no checks and balances, the number of people being illegally sent to psychiatric hospitals is said to be surging.
Testimonies from three protestors, detained for months in secure psychiatric wards reveal how they were restrained, forcibly treated with psychoactive drugs and even subjected to electric shock therapy.
Their crime? “Picking quarrels and troublemaking” – the catch all offence police use to sweep up anyone threatening disturb “social harmony”.

Andy Li Yu-hin, a Hong Kong resident and activist, is reportedly detained at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre in Hong Kong. Li was arrested under controversial circumstances related to his political activism and has since been held at Siu Lam Psychiatric Centre, where he is currently incommunicado and unable to contact anyone, including family members or legal representatives. His detention at Siu Lam has raised significant concerns about his treatment, the conditions of his confinement, and the lack of transparency surrounding his legal proceedings. It has been approximately 4 years since he was released from a mainland China jail and subsequently reported to be detained by the psychiatric centre in Hong Kong.
Background and Details:
Pro-democracy Activism: Andy Li has been actively involved in Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement. He is known for his advocacy work and involvement in campaigns related to human rights and political freedom in Hong Kong.
2020 Arrest and Attempt to Flee: In August 2020, according to the Chinese police, Li was among 12 Hong Kong activists who attempted to flee to Taiwan by speedboat. They were intercepted by Chinese authorities. Li was subsequently detained in mainland China and charged with "illegal border crossing.

This happed to me in America. Locked up drugged and held against my will for months. At the time I had encephalopathy and the treatment gave me drug induced psychosis. They knew this and did not care.
The police in China threatening a college aged kid who protested and fled the country: "The more you post online, the more your family will suffer. You insist on your freedom of speech You think that in New Zealand we can't do anything? You're wrong. We can still get to you!" (41:15)

You know at the beginning when the reporter said she was skeptical because someone contacted her out of the blue and told her "a very extreme, outlandish story"… of what happened to people who spoke out against the inhumane lockdowns in China during covid, I was like: yes the contact was maybe out of the blue but no actually this absolutely sounds just like something the Chinese government / police would do. For someone not paying attention it might sound outlandish but for people who keep up with what's going on in China, this is a story that sounds almost normal at this point sadly.

It is very ironic that the BBC reported on those same protests as : Chinese anti government protests " , rather than what they really were : citizen's antilockdown protests. Meanwhile and at the same time, the anti lockdown protests in the UK were not being acknowledged by the BBC at all, despite being in central London, there was a total media blackout. This documentary looks like a lot of backpeddaling and is not convincing. There are British " troublemakers" who have questioned the British Government and who have either been sectioned, over medicated or completely discredited with mental illness diagnoses. These individuals have disagreed with Government narratives in many scandals such as: Hillsborough, Grenfell, Contaminated bloods etc etc
This has been going on for decades. Not to mention the Chinese government takes their organs and sells it on the black market.
