Troublemaker

“Troublemaker” is the first in a series of stories created using a comedic musical narrative. This first offering is from the novel Blue Guitar Detective; soon to be followed by “Deadbeat,” picking up where “Troublemaker” leaves off. It’s 1969 and Noir detective John O’Leary is home from Vietnam, a lost soul defined by the Blues. The nature of his violent war experience has changed him. Though at heart he considers himself to be a good guy, O’Leary’s plagued by self doubt, most comfortable working within the seamy underside of society. “Blues is the healer,” explained the seminal blues musician John Lee Hooker, speaking to those who might consider Blues music to be sad. Though O’Leary may be lost, he’s anything but sad – saved from himself by a self deprecating sense of humor. Jaded, beat up, and bruised by the bottle, O’Leary’s not looking for redemption – he’ll settle for a little self respect…
