  1. Jay, Jeff Bridges does indeed have a recognizable voice. He is also a country singer and guitarist. I only remember "What A Little Bit Of Love Can Do". And he recorded something called Sleep Tapes. Maybe even a little weirder than this movie, lol. I think he must be a cool guy in real life.

  2. It's very interesting that you didn't take long to grasp what everything was and what was going on, like security programs and hackers. When this first came out hardly anyone understood what was going on or what people were talking about. That's really why it failed at the box office. It was way too sophisticated for the average person of 1982 to understand. Now though, ironically, a lot of people have criticised the plot for being too basic! BTW: Those weird flying machines are Recognisers. They're akin to anti-virus/hacking software like AVG.

The mainframe world in the movie is pretty much the main hard drive of the company's computer system, and the Master Control Program (MCP) is its "Windows" operating system, with the "Game Grid" being its section dedicated to videogames. In the mainframe, the Game Grid is treated like a series of Romanesque style gladiatorial games, used for disposing of programs that the MCP has found to be useless for its plans. Its main goal is to take over all of our world's computer systems via a proto-World Wide Web. Again, no one in the audience but computer nerds knew what that was all about, so they were immediately lost.

In this mythology, if you write a program it's supposed to have your likeness, voice and personality. Essentially, it's your personal avatar inside the mainframe. Programs are under the illusion that Users (i.e. humans) are akin to god. In a way they are, because as Flynn proved whilst inside the mainframe that he can do pretty much anything. He also can't be killed, or in program talk "derezzed". There's also the possibility that he could've saved Ram if he was aware of his abilities at the time, just like he saved Yori from being derezzed later on.

From what I've always assumed, the "water" they drink in the cave scene is their reality's equivalent of taking energy from a power cable, hence what Tron said about finding a power source.

The disks programs attach to their backs, the ones that they also use as weapons, are more or less early versions of CDs or DVDs, used for their data/personality storage. As Sark informs them early on, if they lose their disks they'd be derezzed.

Regarding the figure that appears after the disk destroys the MCP, if you remember early on in the film, the MCP mentions "playing chess" with Flynn. In other words, the MCP started as a chess program and that's its original form, a chess piece in semi-human form.

  3. The sport that you were talking about is called JAI ALAI. It’s really big in Spain, France, Miami and Latin America. Watch the intro to Miami Vice, and you’ll catch a quick glimpse of it

  4. The Oscars are coming up. How about reacting to winners of best picture, like Schindler's List, The English Patient, Rain Man. You've already done many, The Godfather, Rocky, Titanic, were all best picture winners.

  5. There was a real game called Tron. It was based on the movie and came out after the movie in August of 1982. Now realize that in 1982 there were very few home computers. No Internet, everything was dialup with a modem either built into the computer or connected externally. Most home computers of the time would have maybe a 10 mb hard drive and 128 kb of memory and either a 3.5" or 5" floppy drive also big clunky color monitors that could reproduce only about 128 colors. To download one picture less than a megabyte in size would take about 30 minutes.

  6. It is too bad that you two could not watch tthe TV series "Lost" but even at two episodes a brodcast it would be woth it, It would blow your mond. Especially the first two pilot episodes would grab you from the start. It is mysterious, a really cool story and VERY addictive. The bed is endlessly debatable – DO YOU KONUW HOW MANY PEOPLE WOULD SUSSCRIBE JUST TO SEE YOU TWO WATCH "LOST" You are our favorite people to get us involved with a familiar story. We love you and want to share evrything…lol. ❤❤❤

  7. This movie was cool in the day but it probably just looks strange to a modern audience. Hard to appreciate without context. Don't think it was Jay's favorite judging from the yawn. 😄Would love to see some more Tarantino – maybe KILL BILL or TRUE ROMANCE?

  8. 16:08. "Were these actually video games?" Yes.
Disney studios produced TRON. To help promote the movie, a video game was released. TRON was a financial disappointment, however the video game was a MASSIVE hit. It was so popular that the video game out-grossed the movie.

  9. Useless trivia:
The CGI was so revolutionary at the time it was disqualified for the Best Special Effects category because, at the time, the Academy considered using CGI effects to be "cheating."

  10. Slightly naughty trivia 😏:
The "computer outfits" were very tight (as you can tell). In many scenes Flynn (Jeff Bridges) wears a dance belt, that's because he produced too much of a buldge in the crotch area.

  11. So glad you guys watched this movie! I have always been a fan of it. It is a little like "The Wizard of OZ" in the fact that the people in the digital/video game world are the same people in the real world. Like when you recognized Stark as Dillinger. Also their roles/jobs they have in the real world mimic the programs they have, or they created in the digital world. It is a very trippy 80's film, and was one of the very first to use CGI ever in a live action movie. It laid some groundwork for Pixar later on. Mostly to compete with Lucasfilm and Star Wars. Tron 3 has began filming FINALLY!! So this was very timely of you. And YES TRON was a real video game, but I believe it came out after the movie became the hit it was. END OF LINE!

  12. what is mind blowing is that the computer graphic vehicle scenes were hand drawn ( i believe in korea). If you want mind blowing sci-fi, District 9 and Edge of Tomorrow needs to be addded to your list.

  13. RAM = Random Access Memory which is volatile. That means data is retained in RAM as long as the computer is on, but it is lost when the computer is turned off. Because of its volatility, RAM can't store permanent data. RAM can be compared to a person's short-term memory which is focused on immediate work, but it can only keep a limited number of facts in view at any one time. When a person's short-term memory fills up, it can be refreshed with facts stored in the brain's long-term memory.

  14. Tron was great, the sequel is amazing. WAY ahead of its time and did not get the advertising it deserved so in theaters it flopped. Really hoping they go thru with #3. You guys should follow this up with Tron 2 for sure while its fresh.

  15. The movie was so far ahead of its time.. The bosses desk being not only a touch screen, but a HUGE flat screen computer monitor that could display video.. The design of the motorcycles, etc. — I think we see now that life, ends up imitating art…

  16. 29:24 — You guys are doing ok.. — YES, back in the early 80s, this was all mind blowing. It was the first time that people thought about what goes on inside a computer.. What do programs look like? Well, they look like the people who wrote them. If a program is your creation, like a child, then pretty much it's going to look like you.. What does energy or electricity look like when you're down at that microscopic level.. glowing pools of electrons maybe.. — It was a whole new way to think about and look at things..

  17. 32:27 — What does it look like when your computer deletes a large file? Well, when the Carrier starts derezzing and being erased…. Maybe that's what it's like.. The data goes first, and the "frame" would be the file name which goes last. Sometimes us old folks forget that you youngsters skipped the era of floppy disks and slow hard drives. 😉

  18. Tron was turned into 2 video games, Tron and DIscs of Tron. They had planned to have just one game, but couldn't fit it into one game. The game Tron is still somewhat available, spendy, but Discs of Tron is a lot more rare and will pay up to 10k for it. On a side note, the sequel to Tron called Tron:Legacy my friends Discs of Tron is in the Arcade scene. Also Disney animators boycotted this film because they feared CGI taking over for them.
