  1. The best thing about changing from 'men' in the intro text for Top Gun to 'men and women' in Top Gun 2 is that it isn't some 'progressive change'. Maybe it was meant to be PC, maybe not. What it really is, is accurate. In both movies. At the time of Top Gun, all graduates had been men. But then Becky Calder, a Hornet/Super Hornet pilot, went to Top Gun. And that wasn't an accurate description anymore.

  2. They never named the enemy, but only Iran ever owned F-14's which they purchased from us when they were allies back in the 1970's. Tom Cruise is only one of five civilians ever gramted permission by the Navy to participate in a carrier launch. That barrier method has been aound for several decades. It is very strong.

  3. Did you get the Easter egg? When Maverick first meets Penny(Jennifer Connely) in the bar!! Music by David Bowie plays in the background, with whom she filmed Labyrinth when she was 16.

  4. I loved the movie but I did notice 3 problems. 1 no one with those glasses is qualified to fly US military aircraft. 2 the plane in the end should have been a navy plane, perhaps a corsair. 3 the pick to play penny was 6 when the first topgun was released and maverick already had a fling with the admiral's daughter would make him a sex offender pediophile. Should had an older actress or change the name.

  5. A great reaction. Normally sequels do not live up to the first movie but in this case imo it surpassed the first which was great movie for its time. The fact that this was all done with real flying visuals effects makes it standout. There was very little to no green screen that is why the director and Tom Cruise made the film. Lewis Pullman is indeed the son of Bill Pullman who also flew in one of his films. Some say that Maverick is arrogant and in the first movie that is true. In this movie he cared about his team members all returning safely and at the beginning the future of his team when testing Dark star. Dark star was not a real aircraft but a mock up but it fooled the Chinese into to diverting one of their spy satillite over the filming set. Kudos to you for noting the word women was added to the intro.

  6. The success in this film was the combination of homage to the original, respect for the fans, and a desire to make a damned good movie, not a political or social statement. Anyone who enjoyed the original, especially back in the day, really felt every nostalgia moment in this film. From the pictures at the beginning, the sight of Rooster playing the piano, joking with Iceman, and the end sequence fight. ALL of it was paying respect to the fans who loved the original. Tom Cruise will go down in movie history as someone who made incredible action films.
That Top Gun was one of those films that is the bedrock foundation of his career is indisputable. I think his passion in getting the sequel done the right way is his paying it back to everyone involved in the first film and to all the fans of all his films.

  7. Much like the first film they never really said who the enemy was so as to not anger people and make it political.
It's pretty clear, though, if you know some details.
1: Uranium Enrichment is a problem and goes against sanctions. N.Korea, Iran.
2: Fairly mountainous terrain: N. Korea, Iran.
3: Have F-14a fighters still in operation: Iran.
The Iranian Shah purchased a number of F-14's in the mid 70's from the USA, and then the mullahs ousted him and took over. The USA refused to sell any more F-14's to allies for fear of the parts making their way into Iran. This is also the reason that all of the F-14's in the US inventory, minus a few museum pieces, we unceremoniously scrapped after their retirement. The Iranians made their own parts and even improved a few things on the A-model, though they were relegated to second-line service for the most part. The unofficial term for these planes was "Ali-Cat".

  8. One thing mention I saw in another reaction is that Penny always called him "Pete", his first name, never by his callsign. Unlike Charlie, she didn't fall for his macho pilot bravado (at least not in the long run), but for him as a man. She has a closer connection to him than other women because he showed her that part of him, likely in some reconnect moments she alluded to in the bar when commenting on his history of trouble.
