Broadly I understand why they can’t, but it’s always bothersome when games come out in the style of genre giants but lacking 90% of the features and content as the games they’re inspired by.
I notice it more in Rimworld and Terraria type games than anything else, their starting point 10+ years after release is still like 10% the game they’re trying to emulate
Honorable mentions should of included Banished and Black forest. Banished for being a small budget indie pick and black forest for being f2p and still getting updates for free.
Not sure if it falls in the category of colony sim survival games. But as Farthest Frontier was also mentioned you should have a look at Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic, made by a small slovakian studio.
It has a nice difficulty range – from relatively easy to chanllenging – and is hidden gem for people who likes a slow and complex simulation. Have fun!
Oxygen not included is one of my favorite ones, tho there aren't plenty of dlc's^^ just one and that's enough, next big update will be free as devs said.
Surviving Mars is a bit older but a nice game, just the dlc policy is meh since it will cost you additional 106€ just for the dlc's plus the 30€ for the base game.
Frostpunk is also nice but it gets boring after some time, yes the start is hard and probably the hardest in such games but late mid and late game are not rly planned out and get boring after some time. just wait for Frostpunk 2.
Rimworld is one of my other favorites, great game and A LOT of replayability and possibilities to play like you want and create your own story, or just shoot everyone.
Father Frontier just went into early access and needs more content and polish but is very promising and beautiful, it's basically Banished 2.
not mentioned and upcoming release that I'm hyped for myself is Manor Lords.
