The more games I play, the more I realize how vital an amazing combat system is for me to enjoy games. I’ve detailed my best and worst combat designs in games, so today I’d like to focus on another vital action system – traversal. I’ll feature 10 of my choices for the best traversal designs, sharing mechanics from games such as DOOM Eternal, Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Super Mario Odyssey, Metroid Dread, Hollow Knight, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Batman Arkham Knight, InFamous Second Son, Prototype, Gravity Rush, Titanfall 2, and plenty more!

  1. The most underrated traversal system in video games is Infamous 2. You are given a parkour system that makes climbing buildings possible but sometimes slow and sub-optimal in combat, but you gradually gain boosts to your traversal.
A glide that can be upgraded to give you more air time making it possible to jump from high place to high place across gaps.
A launcher that drastically increases your jump height and distance which can combine with the boost to skip huge climbs.
A forward air dash that can let you pseudo-fly if you chain them together for a high cost.
Then the final tool is the grappling hook style ability that lets you swing to almost anywhere within a range limit.

All of these abilities are really satisfying to combo, improve combat and are balanced by the use of your charge making you manage your resources carefully to use them in the right spots.

  2. I haven't played it for a while, but one of my favorite movement systems in a video game has to be from Warframe. Between ground slides, bullet jumps, parkour, and aim gliding your control over your character is astounding. And while the skill floor for basic understanding is relatively low, the ceiling is incredibly high from what I remember.

  3. One game I think handles traversal very well is Ultrakill. You'll start off that game just struggling to get to grips with the frantic pace of combat and getting through each level in one piece. However, as you unlock new weapons, discover abilities, and grow more confident in your play-style, you can perform insane maneuvers in this game. From mastering skills like slam storage to send yourself insanely high in the air and rocket-riding to projectile-boosting and skimming over the surface of water, movement is critical to success in this game, especially if you want to P-Rank all of the levels. Ultrakill also has hands-down the best boss roster of any FPS I've played by miles, and, similar to FromSoft's games and Hollow Knight, mastering the game's movement is paramount to besting the tougher bosses.

  4. despite all of its flaws anthems movement system was super fun. diving or flying through water to reduce heat, air dodging to assist in making sharp turns. the fact the devs went from "we dont think we can do that" to what it was in 18 months is insane. i just wish it had gotten more time

  5. I'll give you one forgotten game that had one of the most fun traversal/combat mechanics: X-Men 3 – The Last Stand. Teleporting through the stages with Nightcrawler was fun as hell.
