  1. Donald Sutherland being attacked by rootlets and then birthed from a pod in The Invasion of the Body Snatchers! Made me nope out of watching more of it as a kid!

  2. "Alien" is still the most believable practical effects, start to finish, of any film I've ever seen, and a reason why it holds up so well, even today, and even in 4K. There was NOTHING more shocking than walking into that theater for the very first time, not knowing, and never seeing clips on the internet, and getting hit with those scenes, ESP. "THAT" chestburster scene—in 1979—it was pure heaven!

and yes, the Thing is amazing, too…but, just not as "believable" as is "Alien"…makes Alien much scarier, IMHO.

  3. Not full on horror movies, but the practical effects in Ghostbusters 1 and 2, still look great today(i class the original as a horror first, whilst the second is scarier than you are led to believe. Horror movies for kids i call it).

  4. I may be biased but, my favorite practical effect scene is from The Exorcist. In the head-spinning scene toward the end of the movie, just after Lankester Merrin yells out Damien, you'll see Regan's head stop in front of the camera with two faces in view. One is of Reagan and the other is a superimposed face of the Devil (Satan).

The Exorcist was made in 1973, and although CGI was first used in the movie, Westworld (also 1973), The Exorcist had not used CGI, only mechanical and camera effects were used at that time. It was when the movie was remastered in the year 2000 that CGI was incorporated into it. In fact, it was that scene that had intrigued me since I first watched the movie, back when I was 8 yrs old.

I agree with the late William Blatty and William Friedkin, both, the novel and the movie were not meant to be portrayed as horror or evil, but about spiritual faith over good vs evil. I also believe this is one reason why the movie's first opening was on Cristmas day.

  5. 😁I'm surprised the effects in Jurassic Park aren't mentioned here. I know it's not a horror film, but the incredible sound design and unbelievably realistic animatronics of the dinosaurs still scare the crap out of me to this day😱. The practical effects of the film still hold up to this day, better than any film I can think of.
